Kodi IS NOT a replacement for watching live TV. Even if you do find some live TV, it's patchy, mostly non HD, and buffers a lot. It's mostly for watching movies, and tv shows in bulk. Also your own library of the same if you have it.

I cut my cox tv account off the other day, and its been rough for me. Most of the stations I watch do not have apps on the fire tv. Kodi streams aren't very good. Luckily I binge watched some series the little bit I watched tv over the weekend. I may have to break and get Vue or something to cover the stations I am missing.

Is it rough because you can't watch your shows, or do you just miss the background noise of live TV and/or channel-surfing?

So I've cut the cord. I currently have a Chromecast which is fine for mirroring apps to the TV. If I want to go the Kodi route and the subsequent add-ons, is it better to go with a Firestick or Fire TV (or can you use Chromecast...I think the answer is no)?

my current internet is 18 mbps if that matters.

FireTV will be a much better experience.

It is possible to load Kodi w/apps to your phone & cast to Chromecast. Not very easy to navigate but possible.
I agree that the FireTV is better than the stick but I run a few sticks that do fine as long as you have a good wifi signal.

Thanks - and for those who watch live sports - does everyone use a combination of antenna for network broadcasts and watch espn for ESPN broadcasts? Or is there something else out there not named Sling TV?

I use a combo, but do use Sling

Football:
HD Antenna (NFL: FOX & CBS; College: CBS, FOX, ABC)
WatchESPN: (College: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN)
^With Sling + Sports Package, you get an ESPNWatch Login. I find it more reliable than just using Sling itself.

Also, Sling is supposedly adding a RedZone package for NFL fans this year. I'll probably get that so I'm not forced watching the Texans sorry asses every Sunday here in Houston. This pretty much works for us. And if not, I'll go over to my neighbor's house who is using grilling and has NFL Network. That way I never miss a Saints game.

Basketball
Sling (NBA: TNT & ESPN; College: ESPN channels)
HD Antenna: (College: CBS)

MLB
Boring. Not made for television viewing

Need some advice guys...

Cut the cord two years ago and pretty much rely on streaming movies/tv (netflix, hbo, plex, etc). Internet provider is Cox and currently have the preferred internet @ 50mbps. Just got a roommate so I wanted to bump up the internet. The next highest available through cox is 150 mbps. Also, my gf has been nagging me about getting a box to be able to watch the local news and Olympics. I dis not take advantage of Cox's free HD mini box when I had the chance unfortunately.

I called this morning to weigh my options. Currently paying $65 for internet, next package is around $85 I think. The mini box is $3/mo but the guy said I needed a cable subscription which would be $10/mo and its just the basic stuff. He told me there was a deal where I could get the contour box and upgraded interenet for $118/mo

Is this a fair deal. I dont really want the contour box, but it seemed fair. All I really want is the upgraded internet. I didnt know if he was giving me BS by saying I needed to pay $10/month to get the $3/mo mini box.

Hope I am being clear here.

If you are just looking to get locals why not just get an OTA antenna? They will be in HD and you don't need a box.

Just googled that. Are they easy to install?

if you go to TV Fool you can see how far you are from the TV towers. If you are close enough you can get something as simple as a mohu leaf. Once you settle on an antenna you just screw the coax into your TV, as long as it is a fairly recent TV with a built in tuner, and scan for channels.

Yes they are easy to install. Just go into the attic and install the antenna to the Coax Cable that used to be on the COX line.

Screw the coax cable from the wall to your TV and you have locals.

That's assuming you are in range.

I basically watched maybe 5 or 6 stations just for random stuff. ESPN, FX, AMC, USA, TNT, and Spike. Half of those do not have fire tv apps. That's the problem I am having.

I have similar watching patterns and that's why I went with Vue. Having all those channels is worth $35 to me, but definitely not $130 that I was paying with DTV.

Well, the real problem is even if all of them did have apps, you would have to put in cable or satellite credentials (which you don't have) for them to work.

You don't want to put Kodi on that thing?

Yes.

Think of Vue as a cable tv provider that just runs over a slightly different medium. It runs over IP on your own devices rather than in the cable company's (or DTV) closed system.

Granted in the NO area, we don't have locals yet so you will need an OTA antenna, which will give you the best picture quality anyway.
