Ugh, AT&T won't activate a phone I bought off of eBay.

I bought a "Brand new SEALED Apple iPhone 5s 16Gb Space Grey AT&T Clean IMEI" phone from a seller on eBay and AT&T is saying they will not activate it without the original receipt, from Best Buy. WTF. I've asked the seller for it, but I have feeling this is going to be a cluster.
Any advice? Bring it into a local store?

just call ATT and activate over the phone

Why do you have to take it to Apple, just go to the AT&T store.

I called ATT, they say they will not activate it because it was not purchased through their 'network'. They are saying it was purchased at Best Buy, they know this through the IMEI, and basically it could be stolen since that transaction. If I had the original receipt they would know that it isn't stolen and they would activate it. Me showing my receipt from eBay doesn't alleviate their concern.

I guess I misspoke, ATT won't activate it.

I don't see why they would have a problem. I bought my Nexus from Amazon and just called in to activate it through ATT

I have no idea. We tried to activate it through our Apple account on our computer...which provided the details of the phone to ATT, but they are refusing to unlock it.

Call ATT, not apple, and activate over the phone

That's what I did. They know the exact phone I'm trying to activate, they are just refusing to without a BestBuy receipt. Hoping the eBay seller can come up with something.

But what are they gonna do with the receipt? They just need imei I believe.

They have the IMEI since we activated it through our Apple ID. They are just saying that IMEI is suspect and they want the original purchase receipt.

Activate different phone, transfer nano Sim to iPhone, return other phone?

get the fark board on it

That's ridiculous. I bought my current phone off of Ebay and AT&T didn't give me any problems when I went in to get a new sim activated.

Or go to ATT and say you lost your sim, can I have a nano sim?
I've never had to activate a phone before

That's a great idea, just buy a new SIM from ATT and have them activate it right there. I was trying to use the old one from his 5c.

dont mean to bash apple but the ONLY time i had a shite problem like this was when i bought an iphone 4 for my wife from a guy on craigslist and ran into the same problem..they refused to activate it even though it was 'unlocked'.
i had to go to some sketchy ebay seller and pay like $2 to get a code or some shite.
i think its an apple-only thing..never ever seen anything like this with android and i've bought a shitton of androids on ebay & swappa since i am responsible for 6 people's phones.

I guess that could be true. I've gone through A TON of second hand Android devices, and I've never had to activate anything

It is probably an apple thing. When I went in the store to activate my Nexus, guy in front of me wanted to buy an iPhone outright. They said apple doesn't allow that.
