Thoughts On Touchscreen Laptops?

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I can't decide whether the touchscreen functionality is worth the extra money. For those of you with touchscreen laptops, do you actually use it?
For the record, I am looking at the Dell XPS 13 and the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I got one for the wife and from what I can tell its very nice to have. The price difference was about 250 for the regular and 350 for the touch. I'd say if its similar to that it's certainly worth it

Works well with Win8 and above

You'll get mixed responses here. Some people will say they never use it and just wasted the money, others will tell you they positively hate it and will never buy another.
My personal opinion? I love it. I scroll up and down on the screen, do quick clicks on the screen, zoom in/out with it. It's something that I have found "just works". I wouldn't want to buy a non-touch screen after using one. My wife feels the same way.

I've only used one minimally, but I found myself using it for scrolling quite a bit. I've always found scrolling on a track pad to be awkward and unnatural for some reason. I don't know what the price difference is in touch screen vs non touch, but if it doesn't bust the budget it's definitely a feature I'd want to have.

my surface pro 3 is probably the best tech item I've ever purchased

I love mine. I find myself trying to scroll my computer at work and even my TV if Im close by running my finger across it.
Certainly not necessary, but I'm glad I have it.

I have one and I don't really use it that much. I find it much easier pulling out my laptop. The only time I really use it is when I'm on a plane. It is more compact which helps me out when I've got a couple of fatties sitting next to me.
Are there any programs that will sync files between my laptop and Surface? If I could successfully do this I may use it a lot more.

I'm assuming you're looking at the 1299 or 1899 versions of the XPS 13, which are the only ones with a touch screen.
Regarding whether the touch functionality is useful, for me it depends entirely on the design of the machine. On one hand, you have the 2-in-ones that convert to a tablet either by folding the keyboard behind the screen or detaching the machine from the keyboard. Obviously, that can come in handy. But the machines that are just laptops (and stay laptops), I don't really see the usefulness in the touch screen. If I have to reach across a keyboard to touch the screen, I'm not going to touch the screen. (FYI, the touch versions of the XPS 13 are still regular laptops, not a 2-in-1.)
One thing to consider, if you're planning on using a 2-in-1 as a tablet, is that many of them weigh considerably more than a traditional tablet. For example, tablets like the iPad Air and Nexus 9 weigh less than a pound, but the Yoga 3 Pro weighs 2.6 pounds. Even the first-gen tablets of 2010-2011 still only weighed a pound and a half. A difference of a pound or two may not seem like a big deal, but it does affect tolerability when you're holding it in your hand(s) to read/browse in tablet mode. Some of the detachable 2-in-1s strike a better balance, like the Transformer Book Chi T300/T100 (About 1.5lbs when detached) and the Surface Pro 3 (1.75lbs detached).

I just bought a Lenovo Y50 and although I like the touchscreen it isn't a major feature for me. The length of the keyboard really makes using it kinda awkward most of the time.
If you want touchscreen get one that can flip into a tablet. My Dell Venue is great for just general browsing.

I have a thinpad yoga for work. It's a test machine, it's awkward as hell to me as a tablet.
We will probably switch to SP3's.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I ended up getting the XPS 13 on Amazon for $1150 (touchscreen/8gb ram/128gb ssd).
I decided I wouldn't get enough use out of the Yoga 3 Pro's alternative modes to justify the step down in CPU.
I'll be sure to update you guys with my thoughts once it gets here.

I've been wondering the same thing. I've been using MacBooks for the past 6 years or so but I just got my wife a Lenovo yoga 3(not the pro version). I was tinkering around with it and the build quality feels like crap and windows 8 is a fricking nightmare. I think there is a ton of bloat ware, so maybe windows isn't all that bad, I'm considering returning for a dell xps or maybe just getting her a MacBook Air and loading windows thru boot camp

Was that link supposed to take me to a SP3 for $799? I went to a $999 SP3 at BB.
