What’s all the hate for Apple about?
What am I missing?

The apple vs samsung/android battle has raged for well over a decade now. Sometimes folks are so tied down they can't see that both platforms are good for each other, in the long run.

We are generally an apple family with iphones, apple watches, ipads and apple TVs. However, I've owned android phones in the past, android tablets, samsung watches and still even use a Shield TV.

To the OP, Apple does just nail integration better than samsung/android, however, android is slowly coming around. Android fans tout being open whereas apple is more of a walled garden. There are pros and cons to both of these approaches. Apples biggest pro to this walled garden is the seamless integration each device has and hopw well it plays with family members also in the garden.
Android usually is on the bleeding edge of features and ideas, however, the con to that is a lot of these things die. Honestly, how many messaging apps has android had in a decade that even google has just shuttered the doors? 50? Sure feels like it.

I guess I prefer apple because I don't need to customize my phone 500 times a day. I have shite to do and a growing family. I just need my phone to f'ing work.

You can't receive uncompressed video from outside the Apple eco-system because iMessage doesn't support RCS.

But you probably don't want to do that because gross green bubble, right?

Fantastic. I could not care less. I am just amazed grown men use the inferior original.

You’re amazed that grown men use a product that allows them more seamless communication with their wives and their kids?

And even better yet, wasting all your time keeping all THIER android crap working ok and under control, let alone being data mined like hell by Google.

Its crazy that people have these stupid tribal debates. I think the breakout down I gave on page one is extremely fair. Both platforms are great. Both have flaws, both have strengths, both are actually very similar in day to day life.

The idea of insulting someone over what kind of phone they use is incredibly stupid. If you made yourself use the opposite platform for a month you'd feel at home.

It's only nerd stuff.

The idea that grown men should use Android so they can tinker with the abilities of their mobile phone is hilarious.

The idea that professionals in the infosec community want to install a more secure operating system is hilarious?

I do think for the average Joe Apple is probably the best balance for privacy and function, but there is a very mature, non childish GROWN MAN use case for android.

AOSP being open source and free of ALL tracking and big brother means that for those technically inclined degoogled android like GrapheneOS is the most secure, and private mobile OS in the world.

Yeah, that's also one of the reasons I don't use Linux for "everything." There's too many iterations of it.

Too many applications to perform the same task, and none of them do everything perfectly. You almost always need multiple apps on Android to do what you need done.

My family are all on iphones, and sharing things amongst us is simple. Everything just works. Doesn't matter if it's a phone 3-4 generations old or just released. The functionality is uniform.

I, honestly, don't think either company is more virtuous in their data collection, but Apple tends to ask if a user wants to opt-in more often than Google, which asks users to opt-out. (And Google typically needs to be shamed into allowing that much.)

The uniformity Apple is the biggest strength they have, but also biggest weakness.

Everything works well. Third party apps are super polished and optimized.

It's just smooth.

On the flip side the near monopoly they have in the US is kind of scary. I think it's over 80% market share, at lest among youth and growing.

Having one company in charge of the primary communication of every American is kind of scary. Especially when the software is closed source.

I do think apple currently has decent intentions but who is to say in 10 years under new leadership they don't go another way and monetize their monopoly? Or implement a government backdoor like the CSAM program they proposed?

The openness of android, while leading to more jank, especially in third party apps. Is also the strength of it being able to use AOSP as a base means you are basically in control of your phone.

There really isn't a right answer. It's a pendulum. The more freedom you give up, the uniformity you have. The more freedom of a platform the less uniform it will be.

That's why I honestly like both. An Apple watch + iPhone + Apple TV is so damn convenient it's mind blowing. It's very comfortable and useful. It's okay as long as you recognize that you aren't in control. I also like a GrapheneOS phone knowing that what happens on my phone, truly stays on my phone.

This really gets into a near political debate about big tech, their intentions, censorship, how much power we give them, etc.

EDIT: To add. I'd say that most android folks who hate iPhone probably have never immersed themselves in 2-3 apple products and been mind blown at the sheer attention to detail and convenience it brings.

On the flip side most Apple folks who hate android probably have not tried an android since the Moto DROIIIIDDDDDDDDDDDD days and think all the jankiness and garbage that was Android 5-8 years ago is still the experience today.

I still contend that if you used a flagship of the opposite OS for a month. You would feel totally at home.

Oh, I agree. If I didn't value the seamlessness of communicating with family and coworkers (who almost universally have iphones) I would just get a cheap Pixel phone and slap GraphenOS on it. No question.

I get that for sure. I basically forced all my family and close friends to use to signal.

To the point where I took my parents and in laws phones. Installed signal and said text me here.

Granted when you are in your 30's with kids your social circles are quite small and it's pretty easy to do this.

But otherwise iMessage is a titan to contend with. I do wish apple would implement RCS as a fallback from iMessage instead of SMS. Would do away with unencrypted messages for everyone, while also keeping their iMessage hook in everyone.

Yep, anyone who cheers for one is not worth the time arguing with pretty much. Competition breeds better products and forces companies into better policies for the populace.
