The day finally arrived, Samsung to Apple

So I've been a loyal android/Samsung person since about 2013. We had a baby back in 16 so he's of the age where we share plenty of videos and such in group text messages and FaceTime but I have to use some other messaging app for FaceTime. All of my friends and family own Apple products.
I have the Samsung watch, the newest ear buds, etc. Have never had an issue with anything and love the phone and other items.
Since my son is getting older when I send a video to the group it looks like it was filmed underwater and there is nothing you can do, other than switch. Well today I decided, I got the 13 pro max in the green. I'm currently transferring everything over (which takes much longer than I expected even though I have the Google internet fiber that is extremely fast).
I plan to get the newest watch (7th generation) haven't decided on which ear buds to get.
So I come here asking for any helpful advice. I forgot to mention the main reason I switched is because Verizon gave me 700 for my 2 and half year old S10, which surprised the heck out of me.
Did I make a mistake, or have I been missing out my entire life?

no mistake. apple is so much better in so many ways.

I had both for a long time, switched to Samsung and had my mind blown and won't ever go back.
But I'm big into cutting edge tech (Fold 2 into Fold 3 now) and Apple is definitely not that.
Luckily I'm the opposite in that all my friends are Samsung.

I’ve had both flagship iPhones and androids laying around for years. Switch back and forth all the time.
Honestly the differences are minor. Although I use signal messenger with everyone I know so I’m platform agnostic in terms of messenger and don’t really have that problem. Signal sends videos just fine and is a more private option.
Android is more open. More customizable. More to tinker with. Honestly more fun to use.
iOS is more polished. Third party apps are typically better and run smoother. The Apple watch takes a gigantic poop on anything else out there. Especially the 7th gen. It’s not even close and I’ve desperately wanted to use ANY other option. Even when I put my main SIM card back in my android I wear my Apple Watch. I’ve extensively used the last two generations of galaxy watch. I’ve got the latest generation HUAWEI watch. I’ve used a flagship Garmin watch. Fitness bands, etc. None of them hold a candle to the Apple Watch in terms of polish and feature function.
But iOS feels boring. It’s monolithic. Sideloading apps is a pain in the arse but can be done easily with AltStore. Apples way or the highway. Lots of non tech folks love that though. At times I like Apple more because It prevents me from tinkering, and sometimes I need that haha.

Damn it’s been a long time since we’ve had a classic Apple vs Android pissing match.

That is the main advantage, all of your tech handicap family and friends use it. So it's better if you value you that more.

Used iOS exclusively from 2007-2021. Switched to GrapheneOS Android distro on Pixel and won't look back. I still iMessage on my Android using BlueBubbles app and an old MacBook as relay, works great. My friends or family are none the wiser about me being on Android when texting.

I’ve been pondering getting blue bubbles going. Just haven’t wanted to go through the trouble of running down an old Mac mini or anything

IMO, if you're happy with a platform, stick with it. If you're not, don't. There's too much fanboyism regarding tech companies. If a product does what you want - great.
Don't worry about what other people say. You're the person spending the money.
Just don't get caught up in, "Is this the best phone or watch?" drama. It doesn't matter. Any flagship phone is going to work well.
I've had Samsung, HTC, and Apple phones over the years. I can buy whatever I want. For me, the iphones are overall better products. Not necessarily because of some tech advantage, but their ubiquity.

Yeah the setup can be a bit of a pain in the arse. I use an old 2013 MacBook Pro with the lid closed in my rack.
Also if you want to text using a phone number instead of an email ID, you have to take steps to prevent Apple from deregistering your phone number from iMessage (which is what Android people demanded of them...). I have an old expired SIM with the same phone number as my current number in an iPhone 7 hooked up in my server closet that keeps my number registered to Apple.
Thankfully being the nerd I am I already had all that shite laying around and just had to spend an evening getting it up and going. But it's been stable and maintenance free for 4+ months. I also donated and talked to the devs on Discord, nice guys who help everyone greatly with their setups and take feedback directly.

Fellow nerd here. Home rack with UDMPro. PoE switch. Patch panel synology NAS. Old gaming desktop with Gen 1 Ryzen 7 32 gb of ram that I use to run VMs like my Home Assistant server.
I'm tempted to use a VM as Mac for it. But part of me thinks that would be even more headache. I've done a hackintosh in the past.

You can definitely use a VM, I avoided that because it'd probably be a bit of a headache and I already had the hardware. It's one step further than just doing a Hackintosh because iMessage and certain services won't connect to Apple without a proper serial number and so forth. However, I did notice a lot of the guys in the BlueBubbles Discord take that route and I've seen people discuss/link premade VM images for the setup, so maybe it's not as hard as I'd think? Everyone's really friendly there, though, so they'd definitely help you.
