SurfacePro for a college freshman? Update in OP, Now need other options, Spectre?

My daughter will be a freshman next fall, and is asking for a SurfacePro for Christmas so can start using it and be familiar with it for next year.
I don’t foresee her studying anything that would require big horsepower, so would a SurfacePro be a good option?
If so, I see they have a variety of packages, and also saw the thread Carsson started about Costco sales. Im guessing BF and after would be best.
Any suggestions to a non techie dad would be appreciated!
UPDATE: Thanks for all the SurfacePro feedback. She went and looked at the SurfacePro, and now believes that she'd rather have a real keyboard, and likes holding a machine in a her lap (which doesn't work with an SP.) She also remarked that the tablet function is cool but not a high priority.
She looked at and is "asking for" an HP Spectre 360. Some reviews were iffy on build quality. On sale at BB for 1199. My priority is getting her a light machine that will be dependable.
Anything else we should look at?

I hate that I can't use mine on the couch. It doesn't sit on your lap well at all.

I've had a Surface Pro for a couple of years now and it's more than good enough for a student.
I installed Oracle Enterprise Database on it, the same database software used by the biggest organizations in the world. Runs like a champ although storage space means nobody will ever use it for real that way but it makes for a great demo machine for client presentations.
It is *not* a gaming machine. But for doing homework and such? Absolutely.

yes and you may want to look at the surface book lineup as well. that's geared to college students but a newer surface pro should be great. probably anything after the first one anymore

That's what I'd do, as I type on my macbook.
But she's never really used a mac, and not sure she's willing to make the change.

Overpriced.
That 1200 computer you are looking at in the OP is also overpriced for what she wants to do. My mom had one and I don't want to tell her she wasted alot of money.

What would you be looking at?

Well, almost any program at school can run on a 500 dollar laptop.
Really anything will do.

HP Spectre 360
this was my laptop before I went to a Carbon X1. Build quality was fine when I used it, all metal. Something happened after I gave it to my daughter and the mouse touchpad area now does not work correctly. I think she was playing games on it. Anyway, 3 years later and it still is without any other issues.
