Sunbird promising iMessage for android

Anyone else see this news? Apparently they are claiming to be able to use full featured iMessage on android with e2e encryption and all other iMessage features. They are signing up for beta access now. I saw one projection of a release date in the summer.
I don’t know how long it will take for apple to shut it down, but they seem confident they will be able to stay running.

I signed up for the beta. I have an iPhone now, but will hopefully be able to put the beta on my chrome os tablet. And if it works as they are stating, I’ll probably go back to a pixel phone.
I’ve seen a couple of people commenting that they have seen an early version and it worked, but had some minor glitches.

Whatever happened to the service for Android that supposedly wouldn't compress videos coming from iPhone users?
I forgot what it was called, but I seemed to recall this was supposed to "help" with video compression or something like that.

No way, they are literally looking at, and selling all your messages. Basically a middleman.

Surely once it is more broadly released someone will confirm, but they claim in the articles from Mac world and android authority that nothing is stored on sunbirds servers and messages are e2e encrypted.
I know companies lie all the time, but this should be pretty easily proven if they are and would likely be a dealbreaker for all involved. Would be pretty dumb to lie about

Can I get imessage on a PC? That would be awesome for very specific reasons that don't apply to most.

One way or another Apple will shut them down.

They said there will be a web app too.
And I agree, I don’t see anyway this is lasting if they can even get it to work at scale. But perhaps with all the antitrust talk going on around Apple this is a catalyst for them opening the service up on their own.

Can someone explain to me why Apple values iMessage so much?
Are green boxes to signal non-Apple phones really that valuable? Because the system doesn't seem too special otherwise.
What's so special about iMessage?

Apple makes their money on phones and see iMessage as iPhone ecosystem lock in. I think this has been a misstep and several years ago Apple should have tried to turn iMessage into a cross platform everything app like weChat and what Elon Musk plans to do now with Twitter. They could have added in enough monetization to make up for any iPhone cannibalization.

Android has a reputation as being for the poors, being poor <<<<<< not being poor. Google probably should have made a separate Android fork for entry level phones with different branding. The flagship phones are not cheap but suffered from that same stigma for years.

I think the better question is how did Google not have a better messaging strategy for the last decade plus to make a product that could have ended this rivalry? On top of that most of these other messaging apps like Facebook Messenger would probably be niche apps if Google had come up with a better messaging client built in to Android. But like most Google products, they came out with a million different versions and kept switching and killing which app was the app. Here's an article outlining their failure in this space LINK /

Just takes one a-hole with a green message icon in a group chat, and the whole thing is ruined. We've kicked people from group chats before.

Looks awesome. Would be a gamechanger!

In the article I read yesterday which I can't find now, the reporter said it did not work for them. Apparently their solution is routing your communications through an iDevice or Mac.

The article from Mac world said they could get it to work with their personal iCloud account, but once they used a “loaner” iCloud login it worked really well.

Apple will go scorched earth to stop it. They know iMessage is literally the only carrot they have left and my guess is they'll spend almost an infinite amount of $$$ to protect it.

Yep. Or they can always tell their shareholders we'll lose potentially billions of dollars so we can make Android users happy...
