My boss wants to give applicants an excel test

I've seen some online programs, but I'm not sure if they're cost-prohibitive for a small office

I thought about maybe coming up with a list of commands for them to perform, but I'm just not sure where to start

The range of expertise that different people use Excel is very wide. Excel knowledge can mean a lot of different things to different people.

Are there specific Excel skills does that your boss wants to make sure the applicant has? Or does he just want someone who "knows excel".

you're so right. they think I'm expert level, but I know nowhere near what all it can do

they really just need someone intermediate who knows how to google. but she wants them to be able to prove some knowledge before we hire them

I know the Mr Excel website has one, but I have no clue how much it costs. I've been curious about it.

If you want to develop one yourself, take something that they would need to do regularly and have them do it from scratch.

He wants a test for them to perform in Excel? Like as he watches them do it? The skill level can usually be ascertained through a few questions and discussion about past projects.

Are we talking borders, formatting, rows/column insertion? Formulas? Graphs? Pivot tables? Macro/VBA?

A simple test would be to create a simple matrix, with formatting, and a graph. For example, price of various quantities of items over time, then a graph of that pricing.

Make the date format something non-standard, the price/quantity a multiple to allow using a formula. Maybe add in average price. Then a graph of some type.

Hand it to them printed and have them recreate it.

Giving it to them printed is a good idea

The main formulas I use are vlookups and sumif

My boss is impressed because I know how to copy formulas/formatting down the page. They’re old

Honestly, she could hire anyone with good analysis skills whether they know Excel or not. Find someone in a STEM degree program, that person will know how to use Google for help.

Give them a task they would have to complete on a regular basis and a computer. See if they do it in a reasonable time frame. Memorizing formulas is rather high school-ish.

I think that’s the route I’ll go

Foshizzle, it’s just an office assistant job

I built my own test for analysts. I would say it requires intermediate skill but definitely not expert. I have it timed at 45 minutes for them to answer about 15-17 questions. It’s a big day sheet and they have to do a mix of different formulas to answer each one.

It has worked pretty well so far.

Would the answer 288 get me a 17/17 on that test?
