i had a conversation yesterday with my wife because she's swapped our living room couches about 9 times now since we moved into the house in search of the 'perfect' couch how its like 'the never ending sofas'.
then i told her the new one was very nice and if the dog tried to jump his dirty arse up on it i was going to buy a shock collar for him.
i have neither GOOGLE SEARCHED nor used any google voice device whatsoever regarding couches or shock collars.
My wife uses an iPhone and outside of a couple of old chromecasts and my Pixel, I have ZERO google devices in my house.
but somehow these 2 things popped up today on my phone.

yeah WTF man. that sofa article is even 2 years old so its not like it was just a weird coincidence it popped up in my feed. i have literally never searched for the keyword 'sofa' or 'couch' at any time.
the wife is the one on facebook buy/sell/trade making deals so maybe fricking zuckerberg connected me to her (i'm not on facebook) and sent her searches to google.
but that still doesn't explain the 'shock collar' because i've only used that term one time ever.

my Pixel,
I would think that is the culprit.

Who says they're spying on you? She might be the one with the loose lips and Google probably has enough info to tie you 2 together. I think the bigger question is, is this an unsophisticated match, like your phone is on the same Wi-Fi and therefore IP address that she did a search from? Or is this a much more creepy match like "Show ads to spouses of visitors to our website."?

hard to say. i'm not sure she uses anything related to google on her iphone except google photos because apple makes it difficult.
but i honestly am not sure what 'searches' default to on iphones. is it google search or something apple wrote?

You pick in the settings of the device, but I think it is still Google if you create a new account. They pay Apple a ton of money to be default on initial setup.

Let me one up you. I messaged my wife iPhone to iPhone about making s’mores. Via Signal which is encrypted end to end.
Within 1 minute she had an Instagram add for s’mores. I’ve personally restricted the hell out of our apps on our phones I’m already super paranoid from working in IT.
At this point I believe these advertising companies have a back door. It was freaking instant practically and we had made zero reference to each other prior.
I use DuckDuckGo for search and had made zero searches and she had not searched anything related at all.

What's odd is why would you want to watch OSU v NW?

My wife (no pics) was talking to her SIL (no pics) about a baby gate that she thought was cool for the stairs. Neither one mentioned baby gate, the brand, or where to buy it. The wife simply said that's pretty cool. SIL said she liked it because it was easy to use and the baby couldn't open it or hurt himself trying to climb it.
Later that evening, wife had an add for the gate on her FB.

Yep. Web analytics are insane. However I seriously think there are exploits built in to devices at this point that nobody is going to disclose.

If people knew for sure that they were being spied on, most would keep using their phones anyway.

Yep, they listen in, I've had the same thing happen, mention some off the wall topic and an ad pops up for it.
