Sound bar or receiver

My outdoor amp/receiver crapped out. TV is a Vizio V505-G9; sound bar sounds easy. Vizio makes an V & M series that look pretty similar except the M supposedly supports Dolby atmos. What do you experts think

I choose soundbar, even knowing the sound is inferior, because of ease of use. With my ATT TV remote, I press on, and everything comes on at once-TV, ATT box and soundbar.
My next set up may be that new Sony 4 speaker deal. I have to do some more research.

for the average joe or those of us who gave up a ridiculous AVR setup for a wife and kids

if a newer dolby format aka atmos or new "dot" configuration comes out its waaaay cheaper to buy a new soundbar that supports this than overhaul your AVR solution that you built your media room and speaker wire runs around.
downvotes incoming but there's no reason for anyone unless you're investing in a dedicated media room and component closet to go with anything but a soundbar.

Have a downvote.

I have a nice piece of furniture that houses all of my equipment in the living room and no soundbar can hope to come remotely close to my setup.

you don't think something like the samsung 11.1.4 soundbar is a capable surround setup without the hassles or running speaker wire and wringing your hands over the best/latest AVR?

Well since the con on that review is Okay Atmos Performance I would say OK. I'll give you capable.
Capable does not equal good, great, excellent.
No doubt that soundbars have their place, the average consumer would be satisfied with one, but they can't touch a good dedicated setup.

I've had a AV receiver for a long time, but have recently investigated sound bars (for an main floor TV). Our "TV/movie" room is in the basement. Watching this thread with interest...

SONOS Beam, unless you already have a good pair of speakers outside or you have a very large space.

In my living room, I've been using a Sonos Beam the last couple years. It's fine and a definite upgrade over the TV speakers. My home theater has a dedicated 5.1 setup and I know it's far superior. However, I generally only use it to watch blu ray movies which is like 10% of my overall usage. The other 90% is in the living room.
I have another set of good speakers in storage and wanted to use them in the living room but there is no space to add an AVR, run wires etc without alot of work to make it look nice. So I settled for the soundbar.
Well I was finally able to get hold of a Sonos Amp which is sitting right where the Beam was on top of the fireplace. I hooked up two front floor standing speakers and it is so much better now.
I'm pretty impressed with the Sonos Amp and highly recommend it if you want something better than a soundbar but not all the fuss of a full AVR system. Just to be clear; you will need to buy two front speakers, but this lets you choose whatever you want. I'm even considering buying another Amp to power two rear surrounds.
I wasn't sure how well it would work with no true center channel, but the phantom center the Amp does is pretty good.

He is wrong.
I have a discrete 5.4.1 setup in my living room. All the equipment is in a nice cabinet in the living room. I can quite literally shake pictures off the walls and piss off the neighbors in the next house if I want to. It's awesome.
No soundbar will do that.

At best it is opinion. I don't have a dedicated media room and I love home theater so mine is in my living room.
He said there is no reason. I just gave you a reason.

Meh, I guess I read it differently than some.

Just got a steal on this soundbar setup at NFM.

Vizio M512a-H6. $350 instead of $500. 8.2 overall rtings review. Wireless sub. Dolby atmos. Upward firing speakers. Two satellites. For the price, this should be terrific while still be discrete in the living room.

I am torn between upgrading to a better Vizio or going over a grand on the Samsung or that Sony deal.
Posted on 11/22/21 at 2:21 pm to Kjindave
It’s hard to find a decent AV receiver right now. The Sony ht-a9 that people are raving about is pretty expensive for what it is. You need a sub to pair with it or it’s pretty anemic. At >$2000 for a sound bar replacement, I think Sony is asking too much.
IMO, if you’re considering a sound bar you would probably be happier with a 3.1 setup and you can always expand it as budget allows.
