SONOS speaker owners..how much freedom do you have? UPDATE 2 PAGE 11

I hate 'casting' because it changes the app from the one on my phone to the one built into the casting device.
I also hate the limited range of bluetooth speakers.
If i'm going to invest in a Sonos system, am I going to be pissed off or does it allow you to (a) use the app on your phone and (b) work over WiFi or something better than bluetooth so the music isn't constantly breaking up because the phone is 2 rooms away.
Am I expected to pony-up for some bullshite play music service like amazon music or spotify premium or does it actually work without also having to buy into a limited set of music services?
Sell me on why I'd invest in this system and I don't give a damn about the sound quality. For the sake of discussion let's just assume the sound quality is great and isn't a consideration.
eta I've never seriously considering sonos until i was out this weekend at a small cafe with my wife and the music sounded great and i noticed they had 3-4 sonos speakers sprinkled around.
and i'm a little tired of the bluetooth speaker game.

It's not Bluetooth and the speaker streams the music not your phone.
As you know I'm not a fan of using my phone as a source. You have the freedom to use your phone like a phone.

Pros:
1. SONOS can play your entire library easily (unsupported formats very few) and most streaming services. Can cast to as well.
2. Can control from phone or pc. Alexa support on the way
3. Uses its own mesh network (with the connect) or wired if you like. Never have had issues with the network or any bandwidth of wifi.
4. Easily can be reconfigured for different setups like whole house, zoned, etc. Want a stereo aspect (even though singles sound good) simply move a speaker, couple of clicks and it is now in stereo in that room (i.e. game day).
5. Playbar sounds great for TV and music as well.
6. Sub can be virtually anywhere and is not limited to directional when paired with soundbar.
7. Music in 5.1 sounds fantastic.
8. Can be expanded up to 32 pieces if not mistaken. Additions take about 3 minutes.
9. Can acoustically tune a room for actual speaker placement.
Cons:
Expensive.

I absolutely love my Sonos.
I have:
*playbar in the living room
*4 connect amps powering ceiling speakers in my kitchen, master bathroom, gameroom, and back patio
*2 Play 1's on each of my wife and my nightstands
*1 Play 1 in my office
Very cool for parties. For example...For the Superbowl, I had the game on the living room TV (with the playbar) and I grouped all the speakers throughout the house for the audio.
Very convenient, but VERY pricey. I have found tons of great deals on Offer Up though. Saved a lot of money that way.

What can Sonos do that a $35 chromecast audio can't?

I really don't know. I don't get the Sonos thing

Sounds like a regular speaker setup.

Once you go sonos you never go back.
I have the 5.1 in our living room, play 3 in the kitchen and play 3 in our master. Plan to put a few play ones in our guest rooms/bathrooms.

You can start a playlist, leave the house, and it will still be playing your playlist whenever you get back as long as you have a long enough playlist. Your phone does not have to be in range of wifi for it to keep playing

You don't have to use a phone. You can use a phone, tablet, or computer.

No different than just putting your sound system on fm. I'm no expert on sound quality though.

True. I guess I just use my phone

I only use my phone as well. Just a stating if for some reason you had to leave the house you don't necessarily have to stop playing music.

It is similar to cast, but it just goes together and all works. You can do the same multizone setup other ways, but it is cleaner and has very streamlined integration
I guess I'd have to see what you are talking about. I don't find anything hard about pressing the cast button then selecting which group you want the audio to play out of.

Part of the difference in this niche they cut out. Most people buy the speakers so no need for additional components. Yes they have a connect amp and a preamp piece to use with your stereo but they really are like the Kleenex of the wifi speakers. Many of the big companies like Bose, Nuvo, Def Tech, etc all came up with products to compete in this new segment SONOS created.
They are very much like Apple in the way most phone apps came out from IOS before droid back in the day. Everyone is making SONOS accesorioes, creating drivers, and integrating out the box with them.
I used to not have access to their product and sold many of their competitors but picked up the line a few months ago. shite sells itself but I was blown away by the quality of the product and the sound is better than I would have ever imagined. Is there better systems out there, yes, but this has it's place and is popular with many folks.
FWIW I don't have it in my house
