Look at these two absurd job postings. I hope the hiring manager sits around and wonders why they can't find/keep qualified candidates. Both in DFW - aka tech heaven right about now.

Network Admin for a MSP
Reasonable T2 job description for a Client facing role aka taking phone calls +
We will only talk to or interview people that send in a complete/accurate resume.
Background Check and Drug Screen required
Technical References are required and will be verified
Work After Hours and Weekends is required
$36-42k

$3k a month to work a client facing role in a MSP. Good luck with that one. I also love the tone of the listing, its obvious they are getting a lot of absolute bullshite applicants. Gee I wonder why.

But wait! If you are crazy enough to pass up that opportunity I have something even better for you...

Data Center Technician
Fairly reasonable job description +
Ability to work in an environment that operates 24/7 with an ability to participate in on-call rotation and provide after-hours support as needed
Desired: CCNA CCNP
Contract role $50-$80 per day

per fricking day? $10 an hour? AND YOU THINK A CCNP IS EVEN GOING TO OPEN THE JOB DESCRIPTION?

people are dumb, yall.

The data center job has to be a type. That's a 500-800 a day job.

This is how they game the visa system. They get no applicants so they offer the jobs to low paid Indians.

. Of course they want a CCNP. Who doesn't? No CCNP worth a damn is looking for a tier 2 support position anyway.

This is almost as bad as burger flippers and autozone techs applying for Senior Development positions at my company.

I have been looking for an entry-level engineering position in SELA for a few months. All entry-level positions require 3+ years of experience in that exact industry doing that exact job. It's pretty ridiculous tbh

Nowhere near enough to endure the bullshite at such a soul-sucking business. I'd rather cut my big toe off with a rusty pair of bolt cutters before I ever work for a company that does any type of managed services as a core business again.

I assume its a typo and they meant $50/hr, but its straight up listed on indeed as PER DAY.

I've been doing the same in a different area. I think the favorite I saw was a "Junior Engineer: Masters Preferred, 3-5 years experience doing this job."

I'm very worried that whatever my first engineering job will be will tie me into a specific field until the technology inherent if the field is obsolete.

American companies are unwilling to train anymore. Then they bitch and moan about not finding qualified workers. Its absurd.

Infosec has this exact problem. The buzzword is cybersecurity and now every college, university, and trade school are rushing to create cybersecurity degrees. Those degrees are nigh worthless in the real world because companies don't want to hire and train you on their systems, they want you to know them already.
Workplace asks for 3 years experience in Splunk and you know QRadar instead? Sorry not good enough, we will just keep outsourcing the position until a FTE with the exact experience we want magically falls in our lap.

Mechanical

I know of a medium-sized company that is only looking for engineers with knowledge of their specific software. It's proprietary.

Their qualifications for an entry-level engineer:

ME degree
Must know company software
3+ years of hands-on technician experience
3+ years experience with all shop and fabrication machinery
3+ years with large engines
Documented professional CAD and FEA experience

They do have an international program for engineers, where they hire on workers from outside the country. The workers get paid minimum wage, but get free housing and a food allowance. All live in the same complex, so they get bussed to work.

They don't actually want American workers. If I had those qualifications, I'd be asking for $125k/yr minimum

If I'm a SIEM admin/analyst in this job climate I'm learning enough about each of the major SIEM platforms on my own to list them all on my resume. dont wait on an employer to train you. or like you said, they will just keep outsourcing to India

if you know Splunk and QRadar you're in pretty good shape as Arcsight is dying/dead

They'll outsource it and have it done by people who don't have anyway near the experience or degrees they are demanding over here. But they don't care because it's not their problem anymore.
