Tried a search but didn't find anything on this.

Looking to purchase a new laptop for home. General use, no gaming, nothing special, just web browsing, Word, Excel, Powerpoint..etc.

I don't keep up with the tech world and all the latest and greatest but while doing a little homework on CPUs it seems AMD has some good options with the Ryzen.

Thoughts on Rizen versus an Intel chip?

They're very good CPUs. AMD has been on a roll lately with their products. Ever since the original Ryzen CPU they've become very competitive. In fact, the latest generation of Ryzen CPU is faster than the intel processors.

I have a 9900K right now but will be switching to AMD down the road. Probably going to wait until they come out with the AM5 slot. Didn't want to get a AM4 chip and then have them release AM5 in the next year or 2 (requiring a new motherboard). want to futureproof myself as much as possible

Ryzen has been on a roll lately and the new chips are killing it. They’re about to release some awesome notebook chips here soon.

if you need to use a wrecking ball to drive a nail, you are on the right path.

Otherwise for your use Ryze is overkill and a waste of money. You'd be better off downgrading to a lower end AMD CPU and getting more RAM and the best SSD you can.

Doesn't matter too much if that's all your doing, but Ryzen out performs Intels chips of the same class and at a better price.

Just bought a 2 in 1 and did a lot of research, I guess Intels new generation of chips are disappointing. They went toward lower power instead of higher performance. Its my understanding that Ryzen 5's out perform some of Intel's i7 offerings.

AMD's fastest Ryzen processors out perform Intel's best in CPU benchmarks but what matters is complete computer system performance; here Intel still has the edge. The reason for this is the Intel processors are mature products with optimized drivers for the corresponding motherboards.
Here's the latest Passmark Desktop Computer benchmarks: Passmark Top Desktops The fastest are all Intel based systems.
There's a similar comparison for laptops with similar results: Laptop Benchmarks
This situation will likely change as better drivers are developed for Ryzen based systems and in terms of bang for the buck I would argue that AMD has already taken the lead.

It is called putting money to use where you will get the most return for it.

If you aren't rendering or trying to run the newest games at the highest FPS blowing money on excessive cpu capability is completely wasted. Memory and SSD speed will be much more noticable for daily driver usage.

Lol no, AMD mops the floor with Intel now and there is no reason at all to buy Intel unless you want to spend more money for 5 year old less performing tech.

Ultimate, I have been looking at an I7, upper mid/upper level notebook. With a mid tiered graphics chip/card. 16 gig, Decent sized SSD.

I am old and wished that an optical drive was still available built in, however will likely purchase a usb optical drive as well.

Would you prefer an AMD over the I7, and what config do you recommend? You sound very informed on tech. Please give me your advice and why... thanks!

I have always used Dell, HP or Toshiba (When they had the I7 Sat sales) Is Asus a great machine/company? Thanks man, appreciate it!

Link? I provided desktop and laptop performance data. I'm aware of the CPU benchmarks in AMD's favor but do you have any complete computer system data to support your claim?
Don't get me wrong. I just built a new Ryzen 5 based system for my spouse and it is a very fast system and I love the AMD bang for the buck.
But I'm into games like heavily modded 4k textures Skyrim and I'm wondering how the AMD systems compare in the gaming environment.

Just search any recent Ryzen 5000 series review... This is from Tom's Hardware which isn't even the greatest review source, from their 5600x review.

AMD's $300 6-core part destroys the equivalent Intel part at $300, and also beats Intel's best gaming CPU in some scenarios. The 10900k is $220+ more expensive in most cases.

What does any of this have to do with your statement:

"Otherwise for your use Ryze is overkill and a waste of money. You'd be better off downgrading to a lower end AMD CPU and getting more RAM and the best SSD you can."

You do realize there are sub $200, even sub $140 Ryzen CPUs that provide more performance/dollar than Intel right?

And Memory and SSD speed will be much more noticeable for daily driver usage? You do realize the only thing noticeable for "daily driver usage" with either of those is the SSD decreasing Windows boot times right?

For someone requiring just something to browse the internet, play casual games, and is not a hardcore user, they don't even need fast memory or an SSD

Yep, I found a different recent Tom's Hardware review: Tom's Harware Review
The pertinent information is the vast majority of games including Skyrim SE which I play, only use single core processing where Intel has still had an advantage. The AMD 5000 series is supposed to be the Intel single core slayer but they go onto say the the availability of the latest AMD processors is not good so I think I'm going to wait until next year to see how it all shakes out before buying components for a new system build. Availability for the latest Nvidia video cards is scant as well and the prices are sky high.

Thanks for the insight.

I did a lot of research recently, and the Ryzen kills intel! I just picked up this notebook today with the Ryzen 7, and it's performance is amazing!
