You've been able to get knock offs of the old Apple USB cable for > $5 at Amazon for years now. As long as they plan to hold onto lighting for at least a decade, price shouldn't be that big of an issue in the long run. I think the bigger problem is you are removing an input port from the device. Sure you can have a pass through, but those are often bulky and less secure than a native port.
i get a warning everytime i use a non licensed device. They can shut this down whenever they want. For shitty connectors, its probably not worth it but for headphones? It just might be.

Yeah and actually, one I bought one that worked for awhile. All of a sudden it said this cable is no longer recognized or something and now I can't even use it. Thankfully it was only 5$

I've never seen anything like that on my iPhone 4S. Is this a new capability of Lightning? Surely USB sent enough data to identify whether it's an official Apple cable or not.

i get it on my ipad (30 pin) and my phone (5). I haven't noticed it on my wife's 4s, and I am sure she would say something as she tells me everytime she gets an error on any device.

i can see the need to get rid of 3.5mm jack, it has its limits.
But we need a standard for this, not apple dictating it. So you can have one device that works in different places.
Well then companies should have pushed this long ago and beat Apple to the punch.
Hell you may see Samsung push out something shitty based on this rumor.

It's new with lightning. There is a chip in the cable and some of the really cheap ones have shitty authentication chips that aren't licensed by apple, so they bug out and can't be used with the device some times.

Apple will slow play this transition over a certain amount of time.
During this transition, the headphone jack will work as well as the new Lightening functionality. Users will have both options and the headphone jack will be phased out slowly.
It's no big deal.
It's just like the Lightening cord for charging. People belly ached and whined and in the end the Lightening cord is far superior to the 30 pin.

A lot of overreaction ITT.
Small observation. Scroll past the first article, second article, third article. Apparently this guy writes for the sole purpose to try and shite on apple products. You can sense it in every sentence. Pardon me if I don't get my jimmies rustled by some shite that apple hasn't even released.

It's not a huge deal, but if you're on the iOS/Android fence this move might be just obnoxious enough to push you over.
I don't understand why there is a need for this. I still to this day don't see why the lightening connector is better than micro USB that everyone else uses.

Exactly. It was like the world was going end. And the Lightening cord is far better.

What the frick?
I use my Apple earbuds in my car ALL THE TIME to make calls while it's charging.
So no more charging while using headphones?!?!?!?

I don't have an iPhone 5. How is it better?

First thing that comes to mind is that it could open up some valuable real estate inside the phone. Every mm in these small devices counts.

I have a 5S. I still don't know how it's better

I agree, but why not just go to micro USB?
It's cliche as frick but this is all sounds like a money grab. They seem to want to do proprietary stuff so they can make people pay to build accessories.

I won't mind this as long as there's a way to charge and use your headphones at the same time. That'd pretty ridiculous if not.

Wireless headphones/earbuds?

The only way I can imagine this is there will be some sort of port on your headphones that allows you to plug a lightening cable in for charging.
What I can't imagine is how this will not look stupid and bulky.

Well yeah, and I have a pair of bluetooth headphones I use all the time, but....say I'm stuck out somewhere and they die on me. I can't even use my backup headphones if I need to charge too.
I mean i know that's nitpicking, but just saying if you do get caught in that situation, it'd suck. But yeah, if this is really the case, the bluetooth headsets will really take off.
