Anyone have recommendations? I’m thinking either the Roomba 980 or the Neato D7, leaning towards the Neato

Not sure if it’s still the case but a few years back it was that the Roomba just randomly bounced around vacuuming whereas the Neato actually mapped out where it had been so as not to overlap. We went with Neato and it’s been great for 3 years. Just ran it today in fact.

Which Neato do you have?

I think Roomba has recently updated their mapping technology

Whatever you get make sure it has mapping and virtual barriers.

This cuts down on the vacuum getting stuck and helps make sure you are actually cleaning the whole house. I have an Ecovacs Deebot 907 I got from Costco and it’s been great. Once my whole house was mapped I was able to set up barriers for places the vacuum would get stuck frequently. It also lets me clean the house by zones which is nice because it can’t clean the whole house on one go round.

We have two dogs and a cat. They are the reason we have a robot vacuum. It picks up their hair great. Just have to empty it everyday.

I have a Bobsweep that I paid about $200 on Woot.
I compare the vacuuming ability of it to an eager kindergartner trying to help out around the house.
It will go over and over the same places, while it ignores other areas.
It does do the job, but it's not to replace a full vacuuming effort

I went a little crazy and got the i7+.

My house is clean AF.

Kinda curious if anyone has ideas for a cheap one that can handle leaves. Putting together a garage gym and I could just sweep all the time, but that's very old fashioned.

I don't mind sweeping leaves off a floor, but if the market for lawn leaf robots doesn't take off soon I'm going to end up building one myself.

Neato. D5 Connected or higher. Once it maps your house out, all you have to do to keep it out of an area is open up the app in your phone and draw a line on the map that the robot won't cross. Every time you run it, the Neato will clean every square inch of the area you tell it to because it intelligently maps and makes sure it covers the entire area.

The D4 does these things as well, but it doesn't have the side brush. You don't realize it until you see how they work, but the robots don't rub against walls. They use their "lasers" to scan and follow a path a quarter inch away from the wall. The models without a side brush will leave a neat ring of dust around your rooms over time. The brush sweeps the floor by the wall and whips the dust out in front of the robot, so it won't leave the ring.

Also, if you have a pet, NEVER set it to run automatically.

Right? I could use it in my driveway for sure too.

Roomba is releasing their lawnmower finally, but that's not quite what we're looking for is it.

ETA: Well it looks like they do exist. I just saw this one, no idea if it's worth anything but it gives a starting off point. I wouldn't pay a ton for one, which I now see is pretty much guaranteed in this segment.

Yeah I ran across the Kobi a while back, but they're still not available and expected to cost $4k when they are. No thanks.

I think I'm just going to build a simple plywood box with wheels, or maybe find an old junk lawnmower and remove the engine, and experiment with blowing a leaf blower from different angles to see what it'll pick up. I have so many fricking leaves, I don't need perfection. I'd be happy with something that'll pick up 75% of them. I think if I blow the air just right, I can make a chute that directs most of the air/leaves into a bin.

If it does a better job than my 6 year old, you can bet your arse I'm going to put a couple of drive motors on it and enough electronics to make it manually remote-controlled at the very least, until I figure out the navigation.

And if the blower doesn't lift acorns, I'll put a fricking acorn picker-upper on it too. frick a tree.

I've had a couple Neato Botvacs over several years. Batteries don't seem to last very long, need to change them every few months. But, I run it every day, so....

We have a eufy and it's great for a budget vacuum. Got it for 212 and destroys the roomba in the same price range. Way more features, shorter, dual front brushes, different cleaning modes, remote so you can drive it where you want (ie under the couch).
