Go to the provider who it is locked to. For example if it is locked to att, an att store can unlock it.

An AT&T store cannot unlock it. They can only tell you to call the 1-800 number where you can talk to someone who can put forward an unlock request. This is of course assuming it's locked to AT&T and not another carrier.

LINK to my nightmare story where AT&T fricked me hard on a phone-locking battle that didn't get solved until I got in touch with Investor Relations Executive Support.

Yeah.... It's a Sprint phone and they are ZERO help.

I know there has to be a way.

You're going to have to give us some details here.

What type and model of phone is it?
Where did you purchase it?
You purchased it locked but didn't know it?
Do you believe it's locked in error?
What is Sprint telling you?

I'm thinking not.

That the phone evidently had a past balance on it. They refuse to unlock it.

I see some services online that will unlock it for a fee. I may try that.

I have had luck addressing difficult issues with AT&T and T-Mobile by filing a BBB complaint.

For both carriers, within 24 hours of filing, I had someone from the Executive VP office call me. Maybe they were… maybe they weren’t… but they sure had power to negotiate down to penny’s on the dollar in one case, and pull a rabbit out of there arse on another. And was always asked if I could promptly resolve the claim.

Not sure if that helps, but it’s free to try.

Did you pay cash for this phone? Or purchased online from a reputable source via debit/credit?

Caveat Emptor, buyer beware. Someone sold you a locked phone they never paid off.

What a pain in the arse. I called T Mobile. Then they ask to get in touch with the previous owner. I don't have access to the previous owner. I ended up getting another phone making sure it was factory unlocked. Never again.

Online is a big place so I'm not sure where you purchased it, but I'd highly suggest you try to get back your money if you have that avenue open to you.

Yeah, basically someone fricked you and sold you a phone that Sprint/T-Mobile actually owns. Caveat emptor.

As for unlocking services, this is basically the black market route. You'd be paying someone who reverse-engineered unlocking codes, received leaked info, has a rogue employee on the inside, etc. Or they could just be a straight-up scammer who gives you fake codes and disappears with your money.

I wouldn't blame you if you did this since you've been put into this position... but if you decide to give it a shot, let us know how it goes. I'd be curious how well those services operate.

Since the guys who do this are typically profiting significantly off of the stolen phone market, I suspect odds are high that they will scam you if they can.

The adage throwing good money after bad comes to mind for me.
