Possibly Moving Back To Apple From Android

Please don't turn this into an Apple vs. Android pissing match, but I have some questions before I do this.
I've been on GoogleFi for almost 4 years now, and mostly been pleased. But I went cheap on a new phone earlier this year(Moto X4) and well, you get what you pay for. My wife is at her wits end because the call quality when I talk to her from this phone is terrible, and I've had a couple of other people mention it as well.
So I'm considering adding a line to her AT&T shared plan(there are 3 phones on it now - hers and my 2 kids). The iPhone 8 is free right now when you add a line, so my questions...
1. Is Apple still terrible about ditching support for older phones once the newer ones are released? Will iOS updates make this phone obsolete pretty soon? I don't really care about having the latest technology, and would probably be fine with the 8 as long as it performs well. But the "planned obsolescence" is one reason I originally left Apple. The XR is $25 per month for 30 months for comparison.
2. I'm guessing there's still a way to import all my contacts from Android to Apple? My last backup may still be on my iCloud account with most contacts, so maybe this isn't a concern. Though I guess I'll lose all my Google Hangout text convos?
Any other issues anyone that has made this switch had? Obviously I could just get an Android on the AT&T account, just weighing my options on going back to Apple.

I just switched back in July. Transitioning all my photos and contacts back to Apple was very easy. I forgot the exact process but it was painless.

Considering that iOS 13 worked fine on my 4 year old iPhone 6s, and Google is ditching support for the original Pixel from 2016, I don't see how that complaint against Apple holds water.

Apple supports their devices considerably longer than any Android OEM. The only difference is usually apple reserves some features for newer devices that do not get added to older, and on Android this usually doesn't happen (and if it does it isn't long before the new APK is release for sideloading)
As far as contacts, if you have a Gmail account you can sync all of your contacts to it and then load them on your iPhone. Not sure of the exact process, but that's what my wife did when she upgraded iPhones last month (since apple store said they couldn't just transfer everything over and they wanted to charge for an iCloud backup)

I'm still using an iphone 7 and haven't had any problems with the new updates.

My experience was last with an iPhone 5, and once it got around 2 years old, a lot of Apps would bog down and not work properly as they updated the apps for the newer IOS. Perhaps it was just an old phone, but it seemed it happened with every iPhone I had, from the original to the 5. Everything else on the phone worked fine, and it wasn't every App. I don't even remember which Apps I had problems with now though.

Recent Android long time user to Apple. You are golden. Google made it extremely easy. All my contacts and accounts transferred over no problem.
I would personally go with at least an X. The gestures are "home feeling" for us Android users. I would not have changed if it wasn't for the X and the gestures. I currently have a Xs and I like it.

I have an IPhone SE and still receive regular updates, so I'd say no.

My wife has the 8+ and kid has the XR. She's been complaining about her phone now acting weird (having to reset it due to losing the cell tower, etc). Which could be the fact that she's reached the 2 yr minimum to trade it in and looking to do that or maybe there's a real problem with it. Not sure honestly.
Life's too short to not spend for a top of the line phone. Hell you spend most of your life attached to and depending on this little device and you want to skimp and save $20/mth (over 2 yrs) and be disappointed? To me, I'd rather spend that $20/mth and be happy instead of fighting something I'm going to spend that much time using. That Iphone 8 may be free, but it's now 3 generations out of date tech. If you keep it 2 yrs you'll be 5 gens out or so.
