My son wants to build a computer, we were beginning to look into it last year, but part prices skyrocketed so we decided to wait. It doesn’t look like they are coming down and frankly i am just tired of waiting. Last year when we started looking it was recommended to look at PC parts picker, I have been looking and really like the site, but what is everyone a thoughts on their build guides for their different level setups?

What will he be doing with it: probably get into some gaming, basic school work, and begin to learn some programming. Is their “entry” level sufficient or would something like this be better and allow him to grow and modify as he gets older (12 yrs old now).

Off the bat, the 3600 is terrible price for $280. At minimum, you should get the 5600x

Haven't built a PC in years...

Just went to a website that I used to visit regularly.

They have a page with build recommendations; entry level to dream system.

Lord... I knew GPU prices had gone crazy.. but not this crazy....

Good luck with your build.

Good thinking. Likelihood? Eeeeeh... maybe 10% chance of that.

If I had to guess, that build hasn't been updated in about six months.

What's your target budget, and what's your absolute max dollar?

Unfortunately, you probably couldn't have picked a worse time to try to build a PC. I've done several builds for myself in the past and right now I wouldn't even try due to GPU insanity. I'd order prebuilt. If you are trying this for educational purposes with your son, that's not helpful but it's the reality for at least the next several months and probably into late next year.

FYI, prices are going up now on other things b/c TSMC announced a big price increase a few weeks ago. There might be current stock available and I would jump on it if so b/c prices will likely be going up soon if they haven't even on prebuilt PCs.

Everything besides video cards are going down. You can get 5600x and 5800x easily now, and sometimes even below MSRP.

RAM is getting super cheap now, and NVMe SSDs are abundant and getting cheaper

Right now, excluding video cards, is a great time to build a PC

So just build one without GPU. Problem solved

Thanks. Last guidance I saw a month or two ago was DRAM pricing expected to increase a bit, now I'm seeing decreases.

So yeah, aside from the horrible GPU pricing/availability, if you don't need that it's fine. Some of the integrated graphics CPUs should work ok for basic gaming.
