New house doesn’t have coax run to the spot I want my TV. Considering getting outdoor antenna to run to another room and hook up to an OTA DVR that then streams to my TV via FireStick et al. Anyone have experience and/or recommendations?

I’ve seen these listed elsewhere:
AirTV 2
TiVo Edge
Tablo
Others?

do you want to pay a subscription for smart DVR scheduling features and guide features?

I used a Tablo for a while. It worked well enough, but I switched to HDHomerun because I also use Plex and it was a more seamless experience for me to have my OTA live and recorded content in the same interface/app with my other content which was absolutely acquired legally.

HDHomerun

I'm using this. Their reciever/converter HDHomerun duo, along with their subscription service that allows DVR recording and provides an EPG (program guide) . I pay like $5 a month for the sub. I tried Plex but it sucked, was not very good at recording what I setup to record.

HDHomerun is on the project list, going to install it and antenna in the attic.

I got my MIL a tablo and a 2TB hard drive.

I'm not big on subscriptions and fees.

It's a little slow but has worked as expected

HDHomeRun is what I use. I have paid for lifetime Plex and Emby subscriptions and actively subscribe to ChannelsDVR.

You will need to pay for guide data if you plan on really using the DVR (~$30/yr or $150 lifetime…unless they eventually change their terms) if you just want live tv and don’t care so much about the data or the DVR, HDHomeRun without subscription works great.

ETA- rarely mentioned but a good company is Hauppauge. I still have an internal PCIE tuner of theirs and a Colossus (HDMI capture card without a tuner). They should be considered reputable as far as I’m concerned. This product would technically compete with HDHR, but SiliconDust is the more popular product.

Thanks all - I guess my priority is to stream to my TVs live - DVR and guide would be nice in addition but I don’t want to pay a ton. Just tired of dragging an antenna across the room, PITA and looks terrible.

Looks like lots of options.

There's no recurring fees for HDhomerun if you don't use their dvr service. It would just only be live TV and the guide wouldn't show more than a day or two in advance. You just hook the tuner somewhere that has coax access to the antenna and an ethernet port then run their app from your fire stick. You can get versons with multiple tuners si you could watch/record multiple channels at once.

We cancel YouTube tv after the Super Bowl and then resub in September for football. We use an OTA antenna hooked up to an HDHomerun and use plex for our DVR. Works great.

This sounds like the winner - thanks all!

Now to find the best exterior antenna and somebody to mount it!

I’ve got rabbit ears tucked into a shelf in the rafter in my attic. It’s far from theoretically ideal

It works so well that I haven’t moved/touched/replaced it in 2.5 years.

No fees for Tablo and you can use DVR for free just have to manually set the time. So again, superior.

Do the research to see if you need an external antenna. You just need to use the public broadcast location sites to see how high your antenna needs to be. You might not need anything crazy.

Bought Tablo a free months ago and love.

Plugged in a 2TB external usb drive I had laying around. OTA channels on every tv in the house and dual tuners.
