Nvidia shield pro opinions

I have a 2016 Samsung 65” QLED tv. I’m currently using the “smart hub/apps” built into the TV, but it’s becoming increasingly slow and buggy.
I’m thinking of upgrading to the nvidia shield pro versus using the built in tv apps.
Apps I typically use are YTTV, Netflix, Disney+, Plex, Amazon
Is it worth the $?

For just streaming, Firebox or Roku is more than enough and much less expensive.

There is nothing better. I have Roku on 2 TVs, Android built into my Sony and Shield Pro in my theater. It's blows the others away with speed and function.

This is what I’m reading as well. I’m also currently running a small Plex server on a old computer that’d I’d be interested in moving to the shield tv pro.

You might want to look into whether you'll be able to watch HDR content before you buy. I know Samsung doesn't support Dolby Vision and the Shield Pro doesn't pass HDR10+, so there could be a problem. I'm honestly not sure though.

no. it is long in the tooth, doesn't have HDR10+, and has a dolby vision green push.

I have kept my plex on my PC but it's not terribly old. Stream to the Shield Pro. I do have the plex premium or whatever it is called which has HDR tone mapping for my projector.

I feel the same about shield. I suspect we will get a new one next year with the new Switch.

Mine was a little buggy (occasional freezes). And some apps didn't work on it, like Hulu & direct tv stream, which sucked because at the time I subscribed to both.
I swapped it out for a 4k max firestick and don't even use my Shield Pro now. :(
It was a beast with everything else though, I just didn't want to deal with side loading basic apps that my main streaming device should be compatible with.

I've never had lag or bugs but I assume they will be coming out with a new version at some points. It's a few years old but still fantastic.

Other side of the coin, I've never had an issue with Hulu or freezing on my shield pro and mine runs as well as it did day 1. What apps do you find in the fire store that you have to side load on the shield pro? In my experience the fire store is more restrictive. I switched to shield pro because I got tired of switching streaming sticks every year.

Fast forward in plex makes the audio out of synch, if i play youtube for a few hours, it takes a good 30 seconds to get back to the home screen. Everything starts acting very very slow if i don't restart it every week or two. Very old SoC in there, i will welcome the new version.

My 2017 is still going strong. It's also the main way I play computer games and such. Great device.
I've considered the 2019 Pro for what I've heard about the AI upscaling, but now I do feel as if we're getting potentially close to a new version and don't want to get screwed.

It wouldn’t play Dolby vision content while trying to sync with my hue lights but the CCwGTV does just fine. Shield pro went back. Wait for a new one.

It's the best but it's overkill for the vast majority of people

The only reason I went with it over sticking with Roku was to host my Plex server which is good enough for me.
