Does setting it up leave any info on the tv? I wouldn't want them to figure it out.
no. and you'll want to do it with the handheld anyway since you can set it down close to your router (no ethernet) to download the games faster.
i cant think of anything that might tip your kids off being left behind unless your TV is smart enough to 'rename' the HDMI input source "nintendo switch" or something after you plugged it in. you definitely want to check your tv input source names after you box it back up just in case.

My Samsung did this for my Switch.
But deff agree that you should set it up handheld. No reason to even take the docking station out of the box before Christmas.

My wife actually ordered the Animal Crossing version from Kohl's for $399 and received a $100 Kohl's gift card with the purchase. It was a bundle and we couldn't find it anywhere else at the time so she will be buying other gifts with the card.
Thanks for the tips on setting it up before Christmas morning. We are going on a trip Christmas day to Winter Wonderland in TX so we probably won't have time to download all that stuff before taking the handheld in the car for the ride. (and watching the kids fight over it)

oh yeah you DEFINITELY want to do this ahead of time for 4 reasons:
1. pain the butt to key in your wifi password, set up your nintendo account, finagle the parental controls, payment methods to the eStore, etc. this took longer than it should have and will require you to have a PC or phone handy to go through some of the authorization/authentication steps.
2. downloading any of the games you've purchased online and plugging in/formatting any SD cards you've added
3. required system updates done ahead of time so you're not in system-update hell all morning right after unboxing it.
4. charging the switch up to 100% and turning it COMPLETELY OFF (hold power button for 3 seconds) so it doesn't lose the charge between now and christmas day
OTOH, you could liken the process above to assembling an elaborate toy your kid just got from Santa

of course if something goes wrong.....

eta - in typical cad-is-an-idiot fashion, its a TOUCHSCREEN device so after i used the joystick to do all of the setup, i realized i could have just tapped on the on-screen keyboard and sped up the process dramatically

Will I already have a Nintendo account if we have a Wii? I don't remember if I ever set one up but I know the Wii is on our wifi because we watch Netflix on it.

there's a 'bridge wii account' option during setup i think that might make this easier and yes, you should be able to use it.

Thinking about getting Animal Crossing for a 5 year old, good purchase?
Posted on 12/2/20 at 11:26 am to Dizz
A buddy told me it involves reading. (getting the same thing for my 7 and 5 year old, hopefully the 7 year old will help out the 5 year old)

Going pick up my switch. Any recs on fun games for 8 and 11 year olds?

Bump.
Also, am I correct in thinking you can either download games or buy cartridges? Is one better than the other? Thanks.

You are correct. Digital downloads are associated to your Nintendo account - so you can keep them even if you switch to a new device. You also can’t lose or break them.
Physical copies are good because you can resell them for 2/3rds of their value if you no longer want to play it. You can also pick it up and play it instantly - no waiting for downloads.
As far as games, my nephews are about that age. They love the Pokémon games, Minecraft, and Mario Maker. Animal Crossing would probably be fun too.
They also like a lot of the cheap indie games. They aren’t always old enough to focus all the way through some of the big Nintendo titles ( such as Breath of the Wild). Definitely see what they want before dropping $60 per game.

amazon had the 256GB EVO sd cards on sale for like $19 the other day. grab one of those if you plan to download most of your games (which is the best way IMO). esp. with smaller kids they could fall out of the car on a trip or get damaged or they let a friend borrow it and forgot who has it.
digital means they're all on your system all the time at your fingertips and like someone else pointed out, you break your switch or have to reset it, they all come right back. the main drawback is space on the system out of the box which is why you should grab an SD card while they're on sale.
eta the EVO sd card works just fine. ignore some of the idiots in amazon comments who say they don't. just let the switch format it for you.

just spend a couple dollars more and get this one that is very well respected and 100% will work:
EVO $24.99
you will hate yourself if you saved less than a lunch at mcdonalds and got an sd card that fails.
