My wife and I are seriously considering trying to turn a hobby of ours into a side business. I build a lot of furniture and she likes making wooden signs with quotes and what not. Is this is the right board to ask for suggestions on how to set up a website? I know there are free sites and ones that charge a monthly fee. Clearly I am a novice in the world of website design so I am looking for advice.

ETA: We are looking to start our own website, not be attached to Etsy.

You are probably better off sticking with something like Etsy or Facebook

Start smaller and build up. Look for the local trading sites and join those. Instagram is another good way to share pics. My wife dabbled in this for a while when she had a space rented at a store. She would use her FB and Insta to advertise, and tagged the store in them, which they loved. Hers was a little bit of woodwork, and mostly small decorations that she made. She went to little trade shows a few times as well, had business cards printed up and handed them out. Most of the money she makes from it was custom orders instead of stuff she would just make to stock the rental space. But she wouldn't have gotten those orders without some form of advertising.

As far as an actual FB business page, I know they charge for that, but we never set one up. I'm sure the info is out there somewhere.

building a website to sell something is the easy part. driving traffic to it is the hard part.
if you are actually selling and receiving payment via the website, you have security and liability issues to contend with. you will definitely be paying a yearly fee to take payments over the web.

i have seen literally hundreds of folks like you ask this question and my answer is almost always the same... i would stick to etsy/ebay until you are doing significant volume.

How’s Varage Sale activity down on the coast? Up here in Birmingham, it’s extremely active and is used by your target audience.

1) They're a Canadian based company.
2) The 2nd amendment says nothing about all platforms necessarily having to offer sales of guns or gun accessories.

Not even pro-Shopify, but this statement was just silly.

I never said they didn’t have the right to do what they did. However, I am certainly not going to do business with them because of the values they hold.

Sounds like y'all have a good idea. But there's a lot of other people that are building or weathering furniture and making signs. Marketing is key until you build your own name within that particular community.

It's definitely not a quick process, unless your talent is at a truly elite level. While you're beginning, don't discount local sites and places like etsy. I got drunk tonight and bought something on there. At worst, it's good exposure while you try to break into the craft scene.

If you get to the point that you need your own website, you should also consider festivals and other craft events. Succeeding in arts/crafts is as much about drive as it is about talent.

Good point. My local farmers market won't allow gun sales. I guess I'll get my produce at Walmart from now on.

Good Point. Your local farmers market once allowed gun sales and now does not and did so for political reasons.
