11.2 but recommending in-ceiling/in-wall speakers?
I get speaker wire is cheap, but no need to go overboard. Also depends on if his walls are still open, and if he has a central media closet.

Depends on if you like (or need) apples or oranges.

In a living room? Cool.
Add in the cost of my kids going deaf at 24 and how much more expensive does that make it?
ETA: At that point, just go to the goddamn movies.
BTW, I am not directing this at you - just the whole concept of 11.2 speaker setup. That's beyond overkill especially when most houses simply watch "How I met your mother" and other 2 channel audio shows.

i've never had a good 'whole house' audio system before. i always focused on the theater room which is what most people do and paid lip service to the lame-arse zone 2..essentially using that to power a couple of outdoor speakers and thats about it.
with sonos i am able to be johnny appleseed and move speakers around and move them around some more until i get an even sound throughout the whole house.
wireless = freedom to experiment and the ability to have different music in different areas is amazing.
the 'alarm/scheduling' feature (it needs to be overhauled) is like the best thing ever. every morning when i go into the kitchen soft jazz music is playing and the coffeemaker is just finishing up. then in the afternoon some cake radio is playing when i get home and it changes to global chill at 6pm which is the time we sit down to dinner. i head out onto the back porch to smoke a cigar and crank up some steely dan or jimmy buffet or cocteau twins just by talking out loud to my speakers.
for thanksgiving when we had a bunch of people over, i had set 'alarms' ahead of time for 30 minute priods all afternoon to keep the music fresh and match what we were doing (when people first got to our house, when we were sitting down to eat, when we were hanging out afterward...) including various volume levels. It rocked. I didn't do a thing on thanksgiving but enjoy family and the background music was on point the entire day.
i've never enjoyed listening to music this much in my house and i would never EVER fuss with the stupid zone 2 stuff enough to make this happen so you can say 'apples vs oranges' but you know i'm right and that sonos brings your house to life musically without having to fiddle & fuss with AVR shite. at the end of the day 99% of people set up their AVR then never listen to it unless they're sitting down prepared to watch a movie. it doesn't get used to play music to the rest of the house because you have to FUSS WITH IT every time you want to play some damn music anywhere.
i'm a geek and all but i'm done with AVRs. i've had enough and with voice control over all my lighting and entertainment i can do pretty much anything i want to do.
TL;DR you just want a home theater system, buy an AVR solution. you want a whole-house solution for music that ACTUALLY WORKS, go SONOS.
eta being able to walk out onto my back porch and push a button on one of the speakers to instantly bring the TV audio with me is worth every penny i've paid so far for this system. watching sports on tv will never be the same.

just assumed wireless was the new age.
Wireless does not = better. Just more convenient. Use any wiring you have first and use wireless for places you don't or just can't have wiring.

Good info guys.
After reading, I’m leaning Sonos amp to in ceiling pre-wired speakers and then building off of that.

My house is 6 zones of audio plus theater. Each zone can play sources independently of the others. Then again, it's a Crestron system.

Damn son!
But i do agree, if you have open walls, there is absolutely no reason to go wireless. Just run some speaker wire a save a bunch of money.

I get the whole overkill point, and I understand while it is an interest and hobby to me it isn't for most people. I do however see lots of systems that underperform and are overpriced and simply put together for the sake of convenience.
I get the allure of Sonos but saying AVRs are limited to "lame" 2nd zones is behind the times. Heos (Denon/Marantz) is an excellent example as is Bluesound. Heos excels in sound quality where Sonos has better integration. It just depends on where your priorities lie.

Couldn't one obtain whole home audio with a bevy of Chromecast audios? They are cheap and you can work things into existing systems.

I'm getting rid of a 2 month old Anthem MRX 520...Replacing it with Anthem AVM 60 and a low wattage power amp for the center, and a McIntosh amp for the rears.
Also having a custom center channel built by Zu Audio--gonna have (3) 10" full range, 99db efficient drivers, housed in a McIntosh-blue painted cabinet.
Should have it in a couple months.

That is a curious design. Will they be using one of their Radian 850 based compression tweeters or just the 3 ZU103s? If the latter I am super interested in what crossover arrangement they will use.
While I am not a compression driver guy I have built a couple of speakers with the 850 and the ones with beryllium diaphragms are incredible but they are approaching Accuton D20-6 diamond prices, but if you want uber-efficient speakers pro compression drivers are hard to beat.
Please excuse the thread-jack.

Most theaters don’t even have 11.2 sound

Most theaters today have crap audio, I mean CRAP. Probably the best in BR is the AMC 16 which has Atmos and 7.1 theaters. Because I have no desire to see 1st run movies (I can wait) I just watch at home, the sound and picture are better than all but the very best theaters and those are extremely rare outside very large cities.
Posted on 12/14/17 at 4:50 am to Obtuse1
Atmos is where its at. There is no end to the number of speakers you can connect.

I like the idea of a sonos or wireless type system but not sure about getting power to the speakers if I go this route.
Amazed why anyone with open walls and has the ability to run wires anywhere they would like would then want to install a wireless system.
Run quality wire.
Install quality speakers.
Connect to decent amp/receiver.
Done
