Got the samsung HDTV. Got the Direct TV new box and HD service. Bought a sony soundbar. Get it all wired up and working fine. Picture and sound are really nice.
However, I have to push my direct tv remote control button twice to turn on the tv. One for tv, one for service. Then I have to do it again to turn it off. If I want sound from the soundbar, I have to turn it on seperately. I've been on the phone with DTV and nothing fixed.
What the hell do I need to do to go back to pushing one button once to turn on or off?

If your TV has CEC, you can enable it, and your TV will turn on automatically when you turn on your DirecTV box. I personally just leave my soundbar on all of the time.

My TV turns off with the Direct TV box when you press the OFF button. Not the power button.
I also leave the soundbar on all the time.

Get a harmony one
Press one button and you can program all of the steps to do whatever you want. Only thing is you have to keep it pointed while it is going through the steps (i.e. turn on tv, turn on cable box, turn on receiver). I have it to turn on tv, start sonos, play bluray, play radio, etc. All are started with one press of the button

My remote turns everything on with one click. The soundbar turns on when it gets a signal and off when it loses the signal (from the TV)
You are pressing the "on" and "off" buttons, right?

A Harmony One is way, way too overpriced and overkill for this setup. A Harmony 350 (8 devices, 1 activity) is designed exactly for this- you program everything to turn on with one button, control the volume on the soundbar, the channels on the DirecTV receiver, and then turn it all off with one button, too. And it saves you the hassle of having a screen, which can be fragile and won't offer much for someone with this sort of setup- it isn't really useful unless you use features hidden beneath multiple menu layers frequently. And if you take the time to set the remote up in the first place, it's not even necessarily beneficial then!
Now, if OP has more devices that he wants to frequently use and have multiple "activities" set up, then I would move up to the Harmony 650 or 700- each controls more than enough devices (eight) and activities (six, I believe. But I'm having trouble finding documentation.) for just about anyone at ~$50-70 rather than the Harmony One (fifteen separate devices. 15), which is a $200-300 remote.
For someone who doesn't need the amount of device control of the One, it's really a matter of whether or not placing the remote in a dock to charge is worth >$100 vs plugging in a microUSB cable once a month or changing the batteries.

The lower end Logitech's work great for the most part as long as you don't have a TV with fricked up input sequencing. When I turn on my setup, I always have to manually change the TV input to the correct one for the Satellite receiver. It always turns on to the Sound bar input. I've been back and forth with Logitech on the phone trying to get it to turn everything on with one button push, and to the right input, but they can't get it put together either.

Some TVs don't allow you to go directly to a particular input. You have to cycle through them. A simple solution is to use an HDMI switch to automatically select the device that's powered on.

My wife is incapable of doing this.
