My review of the new iPad Air 3 and iPhone XR.

Just bought the iPad Air 3 that was released a couple weeks ago and and iPhone XR. Starting a new pilot job next week and we’re required to have an iPad for our Electronic Flight Bag (EFB). I went with the iPad Air 3 WiFi only because it’s got the newer processor than the iPad 6th gen and was only $500 vs. $330. I’m coming from a Samsung 7” tablet that’s 3 years old, so obviously this thing blows it away. The screen clarity is pretty amazing and although it doesn’t have the exact same features of the Samsung, I’m pretty impressed with it. One thing I miss is the “clipboard” feature of the Samsung. On the Samsung, you can go to an article and copy several sentences or paragraphs, photo links, and links to the article, then post in on TD. Can’t do that with the iPad that I know of. It doesn’t have face scan, so I just set up the fingerprint scan to open it and love it. You’re able to scan a couple of fingers to set it up, so I did my index and thumb and it works great.
I bought a new XR because I feel it will be easier to share info between the two since I’ll be using ForeFlight to keep my logbook and flight info.
The iPhone XR battery is incredible. It was at 50% charge when I bought it on Monday. I charged it to 100% Monday afternoon and it finally went to 0% this afternoon so I could charge it again. It has face scan to unlock it, and it works fantastically.
So, coming from a Samsung Note 4 and 7” tablet, I’d say I’m pretty impressed.

I've heard the XRs battery are insane.

I've had iphones since the 3 (skipped a few iterations in there). The XR is far and away the best one I've had. Battery is insane, as you stated.

I have an XR and didn’t put it on the wireless charger quite right one time so it didn’t charge overnight. It was still at 40% in the morning. It won’t make it 2 full days without a charge but it would last a day and a half. Definitely a better battery than I’ve had before.

How does it compare to pro 10.5?

This. Love my XR but you have to make sure it starts charging on wireless. I bought a two pack and my wife had a thicker case for hers and it wouldn’t charge through that. So I took it to work. I could easily get a day and a half out of a full charge. I usually lay it on the charger around 3:30 in the afternoon and it is full by 5:00.

I’d like to know this as well!

I opted for the XR over the XS because of the battery. OLED is great, but I don't need it on my phone because I'm not the type to watch entire feature length films on my phone when I have a 4K TV on my wall. Going the XR route has paid off definitely. Wish there was a purple one, but the red one is really nice.

I opted for the WiFi only model since I can just hotspot my phone to it if I need to use it without WiFi. Saved $130 and the monthly cellular fees.

Anybody have recommendations for a case/screen protector for the XR? I've been thinking about upgrading from a 6s.

A3 is still a 9.7 screen isn’t it?

I think they have the same size.

Wife has one of the slimmer otter box cases for hers. Mine is a Silk. Pretty cheap on Amazon and good protection. I’ve had a few of this brand over the years. Found it when I had a 6 and also bought one for my 7 and now the Xr.

No the air is 10.5, largely the same enclosure as the old pro

My wife also got the new Air with pencil. It really is a great piece of tech. Super fast and the pencil is pretty amazing to use.

No it's a 10.5". It's the exact same size as the old iPad Pro 10.5.

I'm kinda torn between getting the XR or an X (if any are still in stock).
The X has a better screen and dual cameras, but obviously an older processor. I can't justify spending the money on an XS.

Think I'm about to upgrade my pro 9.7 to a pro 10.5. Seems it has more features than the one recently released and the A10 is still pretty damn fast.

I've literally been doing that for years on an iPad. It isn't that hard.
