Microsoft CEO Stokes Surface Phone Rumors With 'Ultimate Mobile Device' Comments

Satya NadellaMicrosoft CEO Satya Nadella has stoked speculation this week that Redmond is prepping a new line of smartphones under the Surface brand for launch in early 2017.
In an interview with the Australian Financial Review published on Monday, Nadella said the company was conducting innovative research that would ensure it continued to have a presence in the smartphone market. However, rather than follow a present trend, Microsoft would attempt to re-define the field in a single-handed pursuit of the "ultimate mobile device".
Underlining his philosophy, Nadella said that the company would not launch into a device category without bringing something different to the table, because it was more interested in how individuals and organizations were using devices, and less in the devices themselves.
"We don't want to be driven by just envy of what others have, the question is, what can we bring? That's where I look at any device form factor or any technology, even AI," he said. "We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today's market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device."

I have seen rumors for the specs on these. It is rumored there are 3 options. The highest option is a business class phone with ridiculous specs that I will have to see to believe.

It's too late. App development kills the phone not the phone itself.

As a Windows phone user, I like this remark.

Microsoft had Project Astoria which let devs port their Android APK apps to Windows Phone, but Google Play Services functionality was lost in the process. If they could nail that, a Surface phone with access to Android app marketplace would be extremely viable.

If I could load Android apps on a surface phone, I'd be first in line for one.
Really just need FB, Twitter, Snapchat, and Schwab banking

So you gave me crap for saying the 950 wasn't ready for release and one year later you don't even use a windows phone anymore?

welcome to the Blackberry problem.
BB created an Android runtime player. Several developers created apps that allowed you to download apps from the Google play store.
However, if a particular app required Google Play Services, such as HBO to GO or Google Maps, you were screwed. Google is also fixing it to where more and more apps must require Google Play Services. One reason BB went full Android.
Windows faces a similar problem if it is going that route.
The other problem with porting Android apps to Windows is that the ported apps will never run as smoothly as the native apps.

What does Windows lacking apps have to do with the 950? The phone is fantastic. You made no sense then, and appear to have gotten dumber.

Microsoft is a software company, they should stick to that.

I envision something like this ultimately.
