I like the feel of Google messages, but it seems half the time, messages fail to send.

I have never had one fail to send, ever.

update to iOS18 and been using it and testing it all day with pictures and videos. Working great.
So the downgrading of pics/vids between the 2 platforms is no more?

That's correct it sends high quality pics and vids between the two.

Textra is still the best option if you're into customizing the app.

I switched back to iPhone about 3-4 years ago, but I still miss Textra’s ability to assign a color to a contact. It was easily my favorite group message and general message feature (the LED on my OnePlus 3 would light up with the color of the contact who was texting, as would the bubble. And a contact’s theme would stick with them throughout multiple threads + their individual message chain).
Did Google messages ever adopt that?
Sounds dumb until you get used to it. But man, I miss it.

If Google releases the RCS API and Textra adopts it (or that particular feature rolls into google’s app), I would consider switching as the iOS 18 -compatible devices start updating. I’m in the beta now, and the texting experience for those who do use the Google Messages app is pretty good (re- sharing video, read receipts, if they’re typing).

Think you might have to enable RCS Messages in settings based on what i've seen. Would be cool if it defaulted to enabled.

When my wife gets back I will check, she installed it yesterday and hasn't messed with settings. Mine was enabled, but I don't remember if I enabled it.

This is huge since my wife cannot follow the simple instruction: do not send me videos.

When myself and my wife installed beta on our phones it defaulted to being turned on. That was my queue to return to Android like I had been wanting to. It's actually worked pretty decent even the whole time it was in beta

Correct. And yes it's default enabled.

Sounds weird but one thing that really irks me about messages is I have to hit that send button in the app to send the message. In Textra, I can just hit enter which is right there on the keyboard while I am typing. I don't have to reach up to hit that send button.

I also like how I can slide a message to the left in the list of messages and hit the call button. Messages has improved but still has a way to go.

I may not be reading this right, but the send button is right there to the right of the actual message. It's a centimeter from the keyboard.

On the call part, is sliding easier than just tapping?
