Looking for a new smartwatch for the wife

We’ve both had the Fitbit versa’s for the past three years but we’ve had to replace them every 12 to 18 months because they don’t hold up
My wife’s is barely a year old and just started going crazy yesterday and not taking a charge.
She’s at the point where she’s done with Fitbit. The reason we like Fitbit is it’s basic and we don’t use our smart watch for much other than time and steps, but she is now slightly interested in the Apple Watch
I just don’t know if we need a $400 watch
Any recommendations?

Take a look at Garmin. They have some basic watches that are great for what she needs. Start by checking out the Vivosmart and Vivomove offerings for women. But they also have the high end offerings like their Fenix line with all the advanced capabilities.

We're a Samsung smartphone family, and I got my wife the Active 2 last Christmas. She'd previously had a fitbit before that. After some hesitancy with the additional features, she really has enjoyed it. Her favorite feature is the "find my phone" widget. It was roughly $150.
But my guess is since she's looking at an apple, the Samsung platform isn't a viable option...

If she has an iPhone, the Apple Watch is almost a no brainer. I have a series 6 and really like it. They’re worth the price. Not sure what the series 7 offers compared to the 6 though.

Apple Watch but just get a previous generation model. I’ve been rocking a Series 2 for about 5 years now and the find my iPhone feature is nice.

i just returned my active2 to costco after some shenanigans getting the ECG and blood pressure features to work.
i definitely think the fitness & health markets are where smartwatches shine.
having said that (and after going through my 4th android smartwatch) i'm kinda done for now.
i'm going back to a nice diver-style watch and chilling on the electronic watches for awhile. too much hassle.

Get an apple watch SE. Black Friday deals coming up should be able to snag one for approx $250.

I dunno. I haven't owned an apple product since my 5th gen Ipod. I honestly can't say either way.

Just bought one for my wife. Our daughter dropped hers and shattered the screen, so being good parents we made her pay for half of the replacement, and still gave her the hand me down. Wife got an SE with Cellular and they were running some promotion on those that when you activate the cell line on them you'll get a $100 gift card in the mail later. I think it has to remain active a month or so first, but it will be nice when Christmas shopping starts up.

The apple watch has terrible battery life. You have to charge it every night.

Not true. I hardly ever charge my series 6. The SE on the other hand, needs to be charged often.

I go three days before charging my se. Great battery life

My Series 3 I charge every other day. I usually try to get it to 100% before going to bed, and it makes it through two days just fine after that. Plus they charge pretty quickly. Take it off after dinner and put it on the charger and by 9:30 it is full.

a smartwatch is no different than a smart phone. a poorly running app could be draining the battery or changing the wake behavior (brightness, time wach face stays on, etc.) as well as health settings (having it constantly monitor heartrate as opposed to doing it once every 15 minutes or something) and some of the fancier watch faces with more doodads can cause excessive battery drain over the basic watch faces provided by apple.

It's simple if you got an apple phone get an apple watch m, if you got a Samsung phone get a Samsung watch.

Fossil has some nice (not awesome, but also not expensive) smart watches. I have an older generation sport model and it is still kicking after 2 years. I will be buying another fossil soon because my favorite one (original Huawei) finally died.

Sadly, this is pretty much it for 95% of folks that use digital watches. The only other options are Garmin, Suunto and a few other smaller brands.
I wish Suunto and Google would pair up and make a true Pixel Watch by Suunto with a true WearOS that goes with the Pixel brand.
Apple has long been known to lock you into their ecosystem which Samsung used to mock. Now Samsung does the exact same thing with their Galaxy ecosystem. They won't even allow Google Pay or "Hey Google" to work on their Samsung watches all while using the internals of WearOS (with their own cherries on top). That's so fricking childish, especially if you try and bash apple. At least apple makes their own software and hardware, Samsung.
