My smart TV just doesn’t get Wi-Fi access and I go straight to my Fire TV on the HDMI port. Maybe that won’t work on a TV with a built in Roku, but it should be fine for most traditional smart TVs.

this is a secondary TV and i dont want to turn around and have to buy another box which is why i'm looking at a roku-tv that i can hard-wire. maybe i should look into the vizio chromecast tvs instead..
i'll be running plex 99% of the time and now that i'm replacing everything with UHD copies i need that ethernet connection to ensure smooth playback. no way i'm spending close to $1000 for a TV that hiccups during movie playback.
so my criteria:
- decent picture specs
- built in device/roku/chromecast/firetv/whatever
- ethernet jack

I have a roku ultra and a few TCL tvs with builtin rokus and they are all the exact same

Vizio e70 f3 Chromecast open box $699 at best buy. I wonder if I should get that over the 65 tcl series 6.
Bigger is better right?

i don't get the big gripes. i'm on that screen for max 5 seconds and usually under 3. how long do y'all take to select apps?

I'm not disagreeing with you. I was just stating that there's no difference between the Roku players and built-in Rokus
The ads are always for random movies in their market place or something like that. It has never bothered me, or ever really made me think about them

maybe i'll just cheap out (surprise right?) and get a 5-series 65" from Costco. They're only $519 and i get like 7 years of coverage just by using their credit card.
i wish costco carried the 6 series.

I have the 65 inch TCL 6 series.
And if by ads he means the right window on the right that I just don’t even pay attention to then yes I guess it has ads.
But as soon as you go into any app or anything you don’t see them. Hell they don’t even interfere with you at all. Absolutely 100% a non issue to me.

What are you going to do with all of those Amazon sticks?

Yes, it's just four tv's but very well worth it.

You won't start seeing commercials for midget tranny porn, if that's what's worrying you.

Exactly what I do.

I have three roku tvs (2TCLs, 1 Hitashi) and a roku 3 on two other non-smart tvs. I have no issues with what this thread is concerned about.

My standalone Roku is noticeably faster than the built in roku on my tv. Now noticeably might just be a few seconds but ain't nobody got time for that.

well my main question was answered; it looks like the TCL has 'plain vanilla' Roku built-in.
from reading around the web it was making me think this is like a mid 2000s PC laptop that the first time you turn it on its unusable from all the crap malware & spam and virus-checker crap pre-installed.
sounds like a non-issue. i just didn't want to buy a tv that was one gigantic ad. at least with PCs i could reformat it and install a clean version of Windows but wasn't sure the options with a smart TV.
