Large monitor distortion/ eyes hurting

I set up a new 49" Samsung ultrawide curved monitor this morning and my eyes are killing me due to the distortion. I think I finally figured out that its because I was too close to the screen? I needed to move it back? Like 2x as far as my old 34" or my double 24" screens were located?
Is this normal? (Honestly not a brag, my eyes are terrible if it doesn't improve soon I'll have to take it back). I wanted the one large screen so I can run 3 windows and look at large data sets/ graphs routinely.
ETA: I just changed my HDMI mode setting from 2.0 to 1.4 and I think that may have fixed it?
So now the question is, does that mean my current comp hardware is 1.4? Which will limit me from not being 2.0?

Are you in your 40s? Presbyopia is sneaky. One day you'll wake up and look at a screen and think, "Something is wrong with this screen."
Check your regular eyeglass prescription and see if you need bifocals/transition lenses.

Is your resolution or scaling out of whack?

I think it's harder to adjust to new setups when you get older. In prior years when I made the move to new tech or a new monitor I just kept on, but now there is almost always a period where I question whether I'll be able to make the new setup work.
I went to a 43inch monitor at home a few years ago and really didn't think it would work - now it's fine. You may have a different issue that won't resolve, but I've had a pretty bad experience adjusting 3-4x over the last few years but after a few days my eyes seem to adjust and I got past it.

Scale is at 200% which the recommended was 300% and resolution is 3840x2160 (recommended). I'm not sure what it should be?
I think part of the issue is I'm too close. Like watching a big screen tv from 3 ft away.
But even from afar, it appears distorted like the image is wrapped around the "curve"? Is this normal? Maybe I don't want a curved screen for multiple window applications?
I don't have any experience past my flat 34" widescreen and that was great.
ETA: I've had multiple people in my office and everyone agrees the picture quality is poor.

I sit about 2' back and have no such issues. I do have the high end G9 Odyssey model.

Interesting. Do you remember playing with any of the settings? I must have a setting off, but I can't figure out what it would be?
So your screen doesn't seem to have a "curved" distortion to it? I thought maybe it was my graphics card or something, but I'm not playing videos and its the same way with basic email and what not up. Its not high quality pictures or video with the problems.

That’s not an ultrawide resolution. 3840x2160 is standard aspect ratio 4k. 4k ultrawide is a bit mushy, but should be something like 3840x1600 or 5120x2160.
Link us to your monitor so we can make sure we are talking about the same thing.
Assuming you do actually have a 4kUW and your system is recommending the resolution you listed, your problem is likely one of the following: your GPU isn’t capable of outputting that resolution, your connecting cable isn’t capable of carrying that much data, or you need to update your video driver.

This is the starting point. The native resolution on that 49" monitor is 5120 x 1440. Running it at 4K resolution (3840 x 2120) is stretching it significantly in the vertical. Correct that and at least the distortion should mostly or all disappear.

I think he might have the monitor that is 3840 X 1080.
Samsung lists 2 49" monitors on their website in addition to the G9 lineup.

As noted that is not the correct resolution. Link the model that you purchased. Or you can RTFM and it will tell you.

RTFM is an old IT joke.

This is the monitor, off Amazon.
SAMSUNG 49-Inch CHG90 144Hz Curved Gaming Monitor (LC49HG90DMNXZA) – Super Ultrawide Screen QLED Computer Monitor, 3840 x 1080p Resolution, 1ms Response, FreeSync 2 with HDR,Black
I don’t need incredible resolution. I’m just looking for a basic office monitor I can run 3 windows on.
I went through all of the resolutions that were listed, the above was the (recommended).

I can tell you it’s still alive and well in the DIY PC enthusiast space, especially during builds. Convincing people that their question is hardware specific, and the answer is likely in their motherboard manual, is like pulling fricking teeth

It’s very possible it’s all 3 of these to be honest.
ETA: I take that back, I was using the hdmi that came with it so I’m assuming that’s decent?
Fwiw I also tried to run just some smaller windows and they seemed distorted also?

Is this one of the available resolutions listed in your display settings? If so, change it to that. If not, report back with the options it gives you.

Exactly. Always choose the resolution of your monitor. If not it won’t look right.

It’s at the office so I’ll try in the morning.
When I went to the second highest resolution setting that was something xxxx X 1080 the display went to being only about half the size of the monitor height all the way across the screen width wise.

3840x1080 is actually a very exotic (read: unusual) aspect ratio. 1080p ultrawide is 2650x1080. Standard 1080p is 1920x1080. You’ve got what most people clunkily call an ultra ultrawide.
For context, I have a 1440 ultrawide, and it’s 3440x1440.
Assuming you have the hardware to push the pixels, and you have the correct data cable (speaking of, what are you using?), it could simply be a driver issue. I didn’t think that likely with a standard UW, but UUW is a different animal.

If it came bundled, it’s probably fine, but no guarantee. What are the specs on the computer you are using?

All of last school year, I was teaching kids in-person and online. I was spending close to seven hours per day at a computer. By October, I was having headaches every day. I bought some blue-blocker glasses and never had another screen induced headache.
