For the life of me I don't know why these ISPs feel the need to succumb to the masses by offering speeds that cannot possibly be utilized by a household. It's silly.
WTfrick? It's very easy to saturate a gigabit connection with a torrent or two. Also, the average web page is over a meg these days, so it takes almost half a second to download each page on a 25mbps connection. A gigabit connection will download each page as fast as the server can push it out, which is practically instantaneous in many cases. Spend an hour browsing at "silly" gigabit speeds, and then go back to a typical broadband connection. Maybe you'll see why "the masses" demand it.

Everyone's drinking the fiber Kool aid like it's the best thing ever. Some businesses operate on a 100Mbps connection without issue. So why does a household need 1Gbps again?
Do you work for Charter or something? A household needs gigabit so that a streaming video will buffer and start playing in 1 second instead of 5. So the gamer can download that multi-gigabyte game and start playing in a few minutes instead of an hour.

And I haven't even touched on the higher-def streaming we will all be doing soon, or the fact that webpages are still rapidly getting heavier and heavier.

Perhaps you should stop illegally downloading things, then this wouldn't be an issue.

Who's we? The average household doesn't do near what you are suggesting. Not even close. The average household doesn't need even close to a gig.

What's the point of carriers offering these speeds when they cap the amount of data you can consume?

I always found that funny.

LUS no longer has data caps

At whose cost dipshit? You think the average customer wants to pay higer cable bills to cover cost of the infrastructure buildout that providing 1Gbps to the home would be?

I sure as frick don't, just so you can download torrents and stream video faster.

Didn't that happen in regards to this whole LUS buildout..

Yeah, keep dreaming. LUS Fiber took MILLIONS from LUS (the utility division) to keep afloat. LUS is a city-government run entity so, if you don't think local Lafayette residents didn't fit the bill in one way shape or form via higher taxes, higher utility rates, etc. you're wrong.

Yeah, the first one is for the average web page, and the second is for buffering a streaming video. How's your reading comprehension?

Perhaps you should stop assuming shite. I torrent Linux distributions and other free software, which helps the community by reducing the load on their servers.

So when will they need it? 5 years? 10? frick, who needed broadband when it came out?

Tell me... what, in your opinion, is the perfect amount of bandwidth for a household, right now? Keep in mind two things:

It obviously takes a while for faster service to roll out everywhere once it starts somewhere

Web page weight is increasing drastically, growing at about a 25-50% rate per year. The average page could very well be 3+megs in a few years... at 25mbps that's a full second just to download the content, and that's not even adding up all the latency between grabbing each element on the page.

Have you ever heard the term "early adopter"? Except in this case they're not really early... gigabit is extremely useful right now.

Did you complain when they were building out the current infrastructure? I bet you're sure as frick happy to be using it now, aren't you? Dipshit.

I hear dialup is pretty cheap these days. Who needs broadband?

Except the community was overwhelmingly in favor of it, probably because they know that LUS has been saving them money on electricity for years.

LUS Fiber is also cash positive, it doesn't need tax dollars. But if it did, it kind of works out because of all the jobs it is creating due to tech companies setting up shop there now.

I'm not a Lafayette resident, nor do I use Gbps speeds, dipshit.

It's obvious your jimmies are rustled so I'll just drop the subject now.

You just keep fighting the good fight brother I'm sure eventually Mee-Maw and Pow-Pow and the rest of surburbia will come around to your thinking.

My jimmies are only rustled because you don't seem to understand how technological progress works, yet that doesn't stop you from voicing your opinion on the tech board. "Drinking the fiber Koolaid"? Come on, man. Somebody has to drink it years before the general public needs it. That's how shite works.

If you live in a somewhat populated area, you are ALREADY subsidizing the rates that Mee-Maw and Pow-Pow are paying for standard broadband out in the country. Does that bother you too?
