LUS Fiber just started offering Gig-per-second Internet service priced at $69.95 per month. It used to be $1,000 a month. All their speeds are up and down. LUS fiber was voted on several years ago by the parish voters and it has been great!
I just switched to 80 Mbps up and down for $54.95 a month. I might pay the additional $15 bucks some day, but I don't know what I would need that kind of speed for right now.
Here is part of their press release:
I'm not sure if Google fiber is even offering these speeds at this price. I am really glad I live in Lafayette. I have had 30 Mbps up and down for several years and it has been great! It has never once gone down and I assume there is some sort of modem somewhere but the cord just comes straight out the wall right into my router.
If you live in Lafayette and don't know about LUS Fiber, here is a link for you:

What is cable offering these days? It's been about 3 years or so since I've had it.

You should. Huge upside for only $15. If you stream, game or torrent, it would make life sweet.

Yeah I'm just a little jealous...

$70 for a full symmetrical gig??? That's absurd.

Negative ghost rider. Here is a direct quote from the recent press release:
quote:
Coming on the heels of last year's announcement that since 2011, LUS Fiber has been cash-flow positive — meaning revenues exceed costs — Huval says the utility is projecting even more growth this year. Last year, LUS Fiber was cash-flow positive by a little more than $4 million, but based on current projections, Huval says that number is expected to hit the $8.9 million mark by October.

I agree. This was the best thing I ever voted for. It took a few years to make money, but it is now making millions for our community and it is the shite!

I enjoyed telling Cox to frick themselves. Felt great! Where are you? I'm assuming you are in Lafayette Parish. You must be getting it soon. I live right in the middle of town, and it's been over 3 years I'm pretty sure.
ETA: Here is a link to check your address. I thought everyone in the parish had access by now, but I certainly could be wrong.

I'm a pretty hardcore libertarian but I would absolutely vote for something that increases access to the internet. Information wants to be free.

So.. to be clear here, you have to purchase their other two services (Cable TV and Phone) in order to get that price.
Otherwise, it's $109.95.

Google has offered gigabit speeds at $50 a month since they started doing fiber, I saw they have raised it to $70 Kansas City though.
Chattanooga has been doing gigabit at $70 for a few years now. I have had it for at around 2 years myself now without TV service.
You won't get gig speeds as pretty much no servers can deliver it to you. You will most likely a lot less than that most of the time. I would say somewhere in the neighborhood of 200-400 most of the time up and down.

That's awesome. LUS may lower their prices depending on popularity. Still a great deal regardless.

I'm curious to see about this. With the 80 up and down I have now to torrent downloads, streaming, etc. it is smoking fast. I might upgrade at some point, but right now I don't think I need it.....
Do you notice a huge difference? (with the gigabit)
