My wife has in her mind she needs a new e-reader because the iPad is too hard to see by the pool and on the beach. Her friend says the kindle paperwhite is what she needs, so of course that's what she wants.

Any recommendations on which version is the best bang for buck?

The current paperwhite is waterproof while the "Kindle" isn't, I think. So that's what I'd get.

The Oasis is twice the price but if she doesn't want it, no reason to bother with it. I've got one and it's much more nicely finished with more even lighting, but it's a pretty niche device

Thanks man

So no need to buy like a generation or 2 older for half the price? She thinks she needs waterproof....so I'll trust her.

They change the models a lot (the regular Kindle now has backlighting, etc.) so I can't remember the features of the prior ones.

No issues buying an older gen if it's water resistant, but I don't know if the prior Paperwhites had any. I'd just go with the current one.

Saw someone swimming slowly in a pool using paperwhite....ipx8 is legit.

Anyone 5yo and under will never know a world where you couldn't take devices to pool/shower/bath/etc

It's much easier to read in the daylight and easier on your eyes. If she's around water much get the waterproof one.

I've been using Kindles for a long time. The Paperwhite is definitely worth the extra cost. Get it w/ ads to save some money. Also, I recommend getting a case for it.

I read almost every night as it helps me to fall asleep. So I splurged for the Oasis model last year when you could trade in an old Kindle to get a discount. It was worth it for me as you can change the back light to a warm color which is better your eyes at night.

I’d do the paper white over the oasis due to the battery life on the oasis being underwhelming given the higher price point, but I’ve owned both.

Big thing for the oasis for me is the amber back light and it's easier for me to hold. Love it. Wish they still made that battery pack cover for it though that they used to sell.

The Paperwhite is the way to go. I had the previous generation, but my wife took it over, so I got the newest one since it is now waterproof and capable of playing audiobooks through bluetooth. Looks good indoors and outside. If it gets smudges or dirty I just rinse it under the faucet. Pretty sweet.

I have a paperwhite and i agree with her.. Ipad/Tablets are too hard to read in the sun. Paperwhite is night and day to a tablet for reading books outside. I don't think the one i have is waterproof. I haven't had any other kindle/oasis, etc just the paperwhite model. I personally have the ad's version it doesnt bother me to see an "ad" on the main screen. I didn't think it was worth the cost for the no ad version.

Amazon dropped price to $99, so I bit the bullet. Saved $30 by waiting a week, so that's a win.
