Have the Ring doorbell, Arlo cameras and Nest thermostats. Thinking of the next smart home purchase - lightbulbs, Alexa, etc. Is Alexa worth it? What are some good features?

You want a mic constantly recording what you do in your home?

I love my echo. I have one echo and 3 echo dots.. one in every room. You can call or drop into every room like an intercom system. You can use it for news, weather, sports and other can control fire TV. When I leave the kids at home or they don't answer the phone when I call I can drop/call from the Alexa app.

It depends. We do a lot of shopping with Amazon and have Amazon Prime. We have an echo and several dots.

The Cool
- I can reorder stuff easy "Alexa, order dog food"
- I can verbally add things to a shopping list so I don't forget
- Love the music "Alexa, play jazz" or "Play 80s music"
- Control Christmas lights "Alexa, turn off Christmas lights".
- Hell I got so lazy that I added a smart plug to the treadmill "Alexa, turn on treadmill"
- I can check my calendar and get news updates while making coffee in the morning

I have Nest thermostats but I have never used Alexa to make temperature adjustments. I normally just use the Nest phone app.

I am fascinated by Sony Vue's Alexa support but I have Directv Now. It sounds like it would be cool to have Alexa find shows for you but again I don't have Vue.

I have a Nest Hello doorbell, which doesn't work with Alexa but not sure I would use it if it did. Phone app integration is easier.

One thing to consider, Amazon (owns Ring) and Google (owns Nest) are battling it out. You may start finding new products that don't have support on one platform or another (i.e. Nest Hello). You have a mix of products like I do but in the future we may start seeing inoperability issues or lack of major features between Amazon and Google products.

If you have a smartphone, you might want to sit down because I've got some bad news for you.

Start with a dot and see how you like it. I love ours and it doesn't even control that much. Got it for about 20 bucks. If you love it, move the dot to the bedroom and buy an echo plus.

Alexa is a toy compared to the Google home. I tried it and the voice recognition and accuracy was lacking. I have all nest products though so Alexa was only used for music and small tasks, but it sucked at that.

I don't frick with Amazon at all.

Google Home and google smart home ecosystem is a better route. Obviously this is a personal opinion. But long term Google AI will lap Alexa.
