cable is its real finicky with weather in my area

COAX cable has always been subject to water intrusion issues with connection points. Water can get in between the layers of COAX. The connection is more complex than you'd think.

Fiber, on the other hand is either on, or off. My AT&T Fiber connection never went down during multiple hurricanes, the great Texas freeze, etc.

Well, we had Cox unlimited giga blast and we paid $160 a month for it and AT&T is just as fast for $85 a month.

Over 4 years, never an outage. One close call as Entergy dug it up once.

Not just you, smurf, but OMG, the prices you people think were normal when dealing with cable companies absolutely astound me. In Texas, I had gigabit with AT&T for about $50 a month. Now I'm forced to use Xfinity, which has the absolute most expensive Internet and TV in Houston, and including tax, I pay $60 a month for 300Mbps (or somewhere close to that, I don't pay much attention as a guy that started on a 1200 baud modem.)

You people in Louisiana need to stage a riot at the capitol against the LA Public Utility Commission, you are being absolutely soaked. Unsurprising that the public utility commission's page for telecom regs throws out a 404.

I've had 1 gig ATT fiber for a few years (pre-Pandamnit), with no issue. Actually dropped to 500 mpbs and still have no issues. That being said, advertised speeds are not what you will get (like most services).

On a side note...ATT is now offering 5 gig service in my area and my local utility has recently advertised 10 Gig Service for ($300 per month).

some installers are lazy as frick and will cut corners, first one I had put the gateway in a bad spot for ease on him and I had all kinds of issues initially. Took a minute but got someone out there to move it to a better location and he tossed in a few extenders

downside now is they want you to use their extenders for a monthly fee instead of being able to buy them outright

and yes the only outages I've had are from again lazy installers that seem to just unplug other people's shite to get theirs done but unlike Cox I've been able to get someone out within a day to fix it

Their extenders were great when you could buy them up front. I am not paying $10/mo for those. That drove me to put my gateway into IP passthrough mode and just use my own mesh network equipment.

I have 2 Gbps ATT Fiber and have not had it go out once in a year. I generally have 2.25-2.5 Gbps on speedtest.

Just be aware of hardware limitations above 1 Gbps if you go that route. I have a multi-gig set up but it was not cheap. Happy to provide more details!

think im mostly sold at this point. i have 500mb service with cox now and that more than suits any of my needs. i'll probably go with the same speed with att and upgrade later if desired.

If you go fiber/SFP it ain't bad. Going copper/RJ45 10gbe is pricey

We have 1 gig fiber and it cost us $70 a month. Always works and never had any complaints. I also never had anything better than 15 mb speeds growing up so this is like the turn of the century for me

So i got another price increase from cox and its now 400/mo for tv/internet.

F all that. Cox internet is horrible. ATT (or any) fiber will blow it out of the water performance wise

How does one get ATT to put the damn line underground? During Ida, most trees in New Orleans not only knocked out power but also the friggin ATT fiber lines that hang from the poles like a 2nd world country down here.

So even after power was restored, most of us (in my area) were without our internet for another month+.

EDIT: misread the post. You can "try" to get them to replace overhead with underground but it would require getting an entire subdivision or large area together and paying the costs. Some areas currently doing these projects say it costs about $50k/house. Seems ridiculously high to me.
