Yep you’re correct. I must have been thinking about something else when I typed yards instead of feet.

Don't listen to these people recommending Unifi/Ubiquiti unless you like spending time troubleshooting and fixing gear.
Anecdotal I know, but I've got Ubiquiti stuff all over my house as well as at several other sites and I've spent pretty much zero time troubleshooting and fixing stuff.
quote:

There's no reason to get Unifi now that Meraki Go and Aruba Instant On exists.
Help me out here. From what I see Aruba is more expensive up front and Meraki has ongoing licensing. Could you possibly show me a basic router/firewall + 8 port poe switch + 2 AP setup from each vendor with 5 year cost?

For cameras just get a Synology, get the extra licenses and use commodity IP cameras. Preferably not Hikvision or any of the other Chinese spyware varieties. I use Axis.
Again here Axis is kind of pricey, and cheap cameras plus synology licenses puts you in the ballpark of ubiquiti cameras (which don't have chinese spyware).

Meraki Go does not have ongoing licensing. There's some add-on subscriptions you can get but it is entirely upfront.
Good to know.
quote:

Got damn, y'all are poor.
Because I think Axis is expensive?
quote:

Ubiquiti USG: $192.98 ($139)
Wifi6 (Lite) APs: $111.10 ($99) x2
Ubiquiti US-8 PoE switch: $229.99 ($199)
Total: $645.17 ($536)
Damn scalpers.
quote:

and you still have to buy a cloud key or run a machine to get advanced management of these devices.
You could swap out the USG for the Dream Router for an extra $60, which runs the controller software and gives you a 3rd AP and more PoE ports.
quote:

Meraki Go 5-port security gateway (FW): $130.33
Meraki Wifi6 AP: $174.10 x2
Meraki 8 port POE switch: $229.99
Total: $708.52 and this is an extremely solid and reliable setup
Not bad, but I'm still not seeing the value over my UniFi gear which has also been extremely solid and reliable.
quote:

Ubiquiti is notorious for A) having updates that break things
I think this is rare and way overblown. Their gear has a rather large installed base and every issue gets screamed about online.
quote:

and B) having security breaches that they tried to hide.
Are you talking about the one that Krebs "exposed"? Have you seen his apology?
quote:

Last year, I posted a series of articles about a purported “breach” at Ubiquiti. My sole source for that reporting was the person who has since been indicted by federal prosecutors for his alleged wrongdoing – which includes providing false information to the press.

As a result of the new information that has been provided to me, I no longer have faith in the veracity of my source or the information he provided to me. I always endeavor to ensure that my articles are properly sourced and factual.

This time, I missed the mark and, as a result, I would like to extend my sincerest apologies to Ubiquiti, and I have decided to remove those articles from my website.

If you prefer something else, that's fine, but Ubiquiti is still a solid value. The issues with breakage/etc that you mention seem to be far overblown, and the vast majority of UniFi gear just chugs along and their owners don't think about or say a word about it. Also you have been misled about them hiding or covering up security issues, and in my experience Ubiquiti is one of the more open and honest companies about problems with their products and systems. Hell, they handle tech support on an open forum for the world to see, and they leave these threads detailing bugs with their hardware and software online forever.

And poor or not, I will always consider the value in things that I spend money on.

I may give the Unifi Dream Router a shot just to see how it compares.

I did a big order on Black Friday.
Reolink 811 nvr bundle (5 cameras)
Unifi AP 6 lite (3)
Window sensors
Motion sensors
Samsung A8 tablet
Wall mount for A8
1000 ft of cat 6 cable haha (it was the best price by far)
LINK this computer to run Home Assistant
Some smart switches
Zigbee dongle
New flood lights

Wanted to gear the hosue out with smart locks, but they hella expensive. Work on that a little at a time.

That computer is overkill for homeassistant. Install proxmox on it then put up to 3 vm's.

LINK - this link has scripts you enter into the proxmox command lines. Will install any VM listed. I used it to quickly create a HA, wireguard, and pihole VM on my computer.

Hey Athletix, I saw in the other thread that you're happy with your Reolink cameras. How'd the installation go? Are you happy with all the stuff you bought?

I setup a cabinet to house all my Ethernet wires and equipment. Got a nifty little pocket in the wall that helps with dropping wires down from the attic. I setup 5 cameras, 3 APs and got my Samsung tablet mounted on the wall with a new recessed outlet. I haven’t put the time into starting up home assistant, but that’s coming in the next few months.

So far the access points and cameras have been great. The alerts for people detection had to be adjusted, but eventually I got the cameras to be pretty accurate. It’s nice to get an update when packages arrive or we get an unexpected guest. I’m glad I finally got this done, definitely gives the family a better sense of security.

Installation wasn’t too bad considering I can walk my attic and only had to get on my belly to plug the cameras in. The rest of the items will be quick installs. Just not ready to get into Home Assistant

The tablet came out pretty good, fits in with the house. Sorry for the low quality pic… I plan on having it display when someone moves in front of it. Have it display the days weather and Reolink camera system. The tablet is mounted in a spot where we can access the tablet before going in view of the doors. Will give the family a chance to see who is at the door before walking around the corner.

Where did you get the mount for the tablet? Been wanting to do the same thing in my house.

I am putting a Reolink 6 camera PoE system in this weekend. I was going to run the hdmi to my living room tv which is next to it. Is there way to view the cameras on other tv's devices in the home and if so how?
