Google sent out an email yesterday announce the change

quote:

While you may not have used Google Play Music as a YouTube Premium member, we wanted to keep you updated on upcoming changes to your provided services. Between October and the end of this year, access to Google Play Music will be removed permanently. Read on to learn more about the upcoming changes affecting Google Play Music and more.

Music Manager and uploads
Uploading and downloading music with Music Manager will be discontinued starting in 30 days. But don’t worry – you can always upload your personal music collection to YouTube Music or download your existing tracks via Google Takeout.

Music store on Google Play
Starting in 30 days, the Music store on Google Play will go away. It won’t be possible to purchase music on Google Play anymore, and all pre-orders will be canceled.

A new home for podcasts
With Google Play Music going away, you won’t be able to listen to podcasts there anymore. You can transfer your subscriptions and episode progress to Google Podcasts, our dedicated podcast player available for free on Android, iOS, and the web. With Google Podcasts, you can sync playback across devices and discover new podcasts you’ll love. Transfer to Google Podcasts.

Thanks for being a loyal YouTube Premium member. If you have questions, we’re here for you. Check out our support resources.

Happy listening,
The YouTube Music and Google Play Music teams

YT music sucks a donkey dick.

no genres, shitty integration w/ casting where you only see VIDEO devices, not smart speakers, fricked up upload that errors out on tracks that uploaded fine w/ google music and no dedicated app; just 'drag and drop' your 50,000 tracks onto a BROWSER EL OH EL yeah thats going to be just fine, no ability to edit artwork/album metadata, nanny-state 'only one person's voice can be used to play music' and shoving all your uploaded music into a corner in YT music making it painfully clear they are ready any moment to jettison that when the google marketing guys decide this feature is an inconvenience.

other than that, YT music is fantastic.

Many of Google's products and services have such short life cycles that I think twice now before buying or subscribing to them.

I get some of your points. Especially the one voice thing. We have the family plan and it gets annoying when I am listening and one of the kids start their music and it cuts mine off. But that's been an issue before YT music. On the casting thing I don't have any issues casting to any of my speakers or video devices

google music: i see all my sonos speakers in the app

yt music: i see my firesticks

WTF google. i don't want to cast music to my son's 20" TV.

just ignore the 30 sonos speakers i installed because you're a SHITTY COMPANY and you want me to buy google shite instead of allowing music to play on one of the most popular smart speaker brands in the world.

I was a fan of Google Music. I tried YouTube Music and I agree, it blows.

I moved to Apple Music due to collecting a few Apple devices over the years. Really happy with Apple Music.

This thread reminds me why I am happy to have a collection of 1000+ LPs and a nice fully analog system to play them on.

I use YT music and I definitely don't like it as much as Google Play Music, but I LOVE ad-free YT and I like that YT videos are integrated - helps me find music for my toddler that's been curated by other parents

Thats why I like it. I got it for karate kid but got addicted to no ads.

I prefer the music in some ways to Pandora as I can pick out specific live performances.

Much much better than Pandora for classical music as well.

YT music sucks. But I honestly would use it if my music playlists didn't cross contaminate my YT playlists.

Switched to Spotify and didn't look back.

The YouTube music disaster - Gun, meet foot. Another Google failure.

The author read my mind:

Even though Google Play Music was a dated, ugly mess of an app, it worked. For people with music collections that can’t be replicated by a streaming-service catalog, Google Play Music let you easily get this music on nearly every device, for free, with a simple upload process.

I was fine with GPM as it was. And since I'm grandfathered in the 7.99 plan I'll stick around to YTM. But it does largely suck.

One positive though. I feel like the my likes radio on YTM is a serious upgrade from the analogous feeling lucky playlist on GPM. more diverse playlists.

same. at that price point its hard to cancel it and i'm praying they get their heads out of their arse at some point and make yt music an actual "music" app and not a bastardized video app.

You're doing something wrong. I can cast to any speaker.

So far, I like it a lot. The best college/alt channel ever popped up recently. It has them all.

I would maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Because it finds all of my audio only cast devices with no issues.

Show me a screenshot with a Sonos speaker and not a shitty Google speaker.

Google does great if you buy into their crap exclusively.
