I like thermostats that do what I ask and don't preach to me about a made up political fairy tale.
Why do you keep resetting your thermostat?
I've had an ecobee for 7 years and I have no idea what the frick you're talking about, probably because I turned that shite off on day 1

Here in Texas, we found out the hard way that all those smart thermostats come with provisions that they can mess with your temps whenever they feel like it. Power grid was having issues and they went into a ton of ppls smart thermostats and turned adjusted settings without telling you. It was in the agreements we all just click accept on!
Get rid of your smart thermostats. Get up off your butt and walk three feet to the wall. lol

How long until we can’t actually control our own thermostats? 5 years O/U

This is false. Neither the state nor power companies can adjust the temperature on “all those smart thermostats”…“whenever they feel like it”. If you signed up for a cheaper plan that allowed this, that is a different matter altogether and your responsibility.
Signed,
smart thermostat owner in texas with a temperature controlled house according to my own schedule.

It was an opt-in program with your utility company in return for a discount. It absolutely was not in "the agreements we all just click accept on". People opted in to save a buck and got burned. Them's the breaks, and has very little to do with owning an internet enabled thermostat.
