Ever since the new maps update, unless you are navigating while using Android Auto it no longer shows the traffic. And even when navigating it only the traffic on your route. This is a major downgrade, and reading around sounds like it's on purpose.

Assuming Waze doesn't have this issue is it time to dump Google maps

UPDATE, Apparently this is only in select metropolitan areas as of now

Waze is still showing traffic data even though I'm not driving. Hey, look, I-10 EB is still farked up because people merging on from Cane Island aren't accelerating properly. At almost 1900, going into town. SNAFU.

I know Google bought Waze. But they are keeping separate apps

If your modem navigation app doesn't show traffic... Then it's not that useful

I would continue to use Google maps if they roll this change back

No, the first post is not fully accurate as a description of current/intended Google Maps behavior.
There was a real, widespread bug in late July 2026 where the color-coded traffic overlays (green/yellow/orange/red lines) disappeared for many users on Android, iOS, and the web version. The underlying traffic data still worked for routing and ETAs, and colors sometimes appeared on the active route during navigation, but the general map overview lost the visual traffic layer. Google confirmed the issue and deployed a server-side fix around July 28, 2026.

In normal operation (post-fix), enabling the Traffic layer should still show congestion colors on the broader map, not just the active route. If it’s still broken for someone on August 20+, it’s more likely a lingering bug or local settings problem than an intentional permanent downgrade.
Bottom line: The complaint matches the July bug’s symptoms pretty well, and some people may still be seeing similar issues, but it’s not accurate to say this is the new permanent design of the immersive update

I fear Google is going to eventually kill Waze the same way they treat every other company they purchase.

Hope I'm wrong.

That would suck.

Thanks for the Gemini response, googling was too difficult... Lol. Even though it's not true.

Google has no plans to fix it as of right now as they reintroduced the issue a few days as a key update to immersive maps.

Hey we get 3d trees now though... Incredible

UPDATE, Apparently this is only in select metropolitan areas as of now

Grok. Do people still google things instead of just asking ai to do it for them?

quote:

There is no official announcement or reporting that Google intentionally limited or removed the broader traffic layer as part of that update.

Summary: The first post captured a real July bug that has since been addressed. This reply treats a (possibly lingering or settings-related) display issue as a deliberate, unfixed “key update.” That’s not supported by Google’s statements or reporting. If traffic still isn’t showing on the map overview for some people, it’s more likely a leftover glitch, a toggle that needs checking (Layers > Traffic), or a cache/app-version issue than a permanent design decision.

You keep posting the same thing and yet it's still wrong. People who just post AI responses are useless. Everyone tried that already especially when they act like it's never wrong

Here I'll do you a favor and ask Gemini

quote:

The new Google Maps Immersive Navigation update changed the user interface, causing general traffic lines on adjacent streets to disappear during active driving unless you switch to a specific overview mode.

quote:

Active Routing Only: Traffic colors now typically only display directly on your chosen route and suggested alternate paths while you are navigating.

quote:

How to See Traffic Now

Tap the North Up or compass button on your screen to enter Overview mode.

General traffic flow and congestion colors are more likely to appear in this overview layout rather than standard turn-by-turn 3D tracking. [1, 2]

However Gemini doesn't outline this is for specific metropolitan areas.

But yes when using immersive view, traffic is remove from the general view unless you are in the overview north view. Which is zoomed out and doesn't show every street.

It's poor design

Again, it's a bug. Nothing official from anyone anywhere it's intended nor in any patch notes they were removing it. Read better.

Once again read better. They fixed the July bug, it was working on my phone just fine.

Until the immersive maps update was pushed out earlier this week.

When maps toggles to 3d mode it disable traffic.

Even their own demonstration shows it removed

Google blog

Here I will even bother to give you the picture from the link, since if this blog does not come from your AI response unless speifically prompted.

From this screenshot from their own demo, you can see traffic is removed. If you click the link above you can see it is removed from all of their demos
