People can only use FaceTime to call others who have Apple devices. But Duo lets you place video calls between Android and iPhone users, and sizably increases the universe of people with whom you can hold a video conversation.

Is this replacing hangouts on iOS?

No this is a direct facetime competitor. It is person to person video calling. Maybe this will force Apple to open up FT to android.

Downloaded it. I'm really liking this. My kids have an iPhone and wife and I have samsung notes. Ability to easily video call is a big deal.

hangouts
Google said yesterday that Hangouts will have more of an Enterprise focus going forward.
Duo and Allo will be their cross-platform consumer apps for video chatting and messaging respectively.

I'll try Allo if it has SMS. Otherwise, I have no interest in yet another app that someone else has to download.

This is so true. No way would any of my douchey friends download an app just to text with me.

Used primarily for business.

Allo is reported to have SMS. It will also have the Google Assistant that will be used for Google Home and as an improved voice interface for Google Now.

I'm excited for this. Anyone have some insight into when it's going to be released?

I guess the idea behind the separate app is to boost visibility of the feature/service, but I would hope that they integrate it into the OS more, so that from, say, the contacts screen where I can select to text, call email, etc. I could choose to video call. I just installed it but honestly I doubt I'll ever use it other than maybe for times like these when cell service is shitty and I want to make a call over data. Other than for talking to family or someone that I don't get to see often I don't see much reason for the video aspect of the call. I'd imagine that the audio quality would be much better than a normal cell call but that's a whole different issue.
Now allo... I don't even know what to make of that

Yeah the other thing that would be nice is off they could somehow merge this into the standard dialer. Unfortunately I think this would be technically challenging since it would basically have to merge 3 types of calls: standard cell calls, digital voice and digital video. Problem being that digital audio would be superior quality but would use data if not on wifi. A data call could seamlessly add/remove video mid call assuming both clients support it. Standard/analog voice would not be compatible with either of these but is essentially universal. Sort of the same problem with sms/messaging.
Maybe one day we could live in such a utopia where call and messaging systems are modernized and standardized across platforms. I won't hold my breath, though.

Quality seems much better than hangouts. Wife thought it was a million times better on her iPhone than hangouts. I have Android.
She immediately deleted hangouts.
