I'm sure it would be expensive.

I have a device that has broken this plastic part 3 times. If it could be replaced by an aluminum part, it would last forever.

How about 3D scanning my part to make the files necessary for printing? Anybody do that?

How complex is the part? May be better off just having it CNC’d/milled

how complex is the part? It's interesting your first jump is to 3d printing for aluminum given it's likely very high cost and many lower cost alternatives for fabricating parts out of aluminum.

Edit: CP3 beat me to it

Here is the part:

I'm pretty sure either 3D printing or CNC milling will be too expensive, but I'm still curious. Would there be some way to cast (maybe in sand) the part and then drill the holes required?

Yeah you could cast it, might take you a few tries though.

Yep. Lost PLA casting would work.

That would have been my thought, too.

Why the added complexity of 3D modeling and printing (which he's already indicated might not be in his wheelhouse) for lost PLA casting? He could just make a wood flask and use the part he already has to create the cavity. either way i guess the real barrier is if he wants to buy/build the equipment to melt the aluminum. he really needs to decide where he wants to start trading money for his time.

edit: could also probably fab something up with hand tools pending how much of that geometry is critical and how much is just aesthetic/plastic saving considerations

Thanks for the replies, I learned a few things (including that all this will be either too much trouble or too much money).

Well dang. Good points. Sometimes we overcomplicate the simplest of things
