A report today claims that Apple is cutting its iPhone X production targets in half in response to ‘disappointing holiday season sales.’

Apple is said to have notified suppliers that it has cut its production target for the first quarter of this year to 20M, after previously telling them to expect to produce 40M units

...Apple is said to be maintaining its existing production target of 30M units across the iPhone 7/Plus and 8/Plus ranges.

I guess consumers are balking at the high prices which is good to see. If Apple made it work Samsung and Google would follow. The article says there's some hope that a bigger iPhone X Plus could help, and it might, but I think the big stumbling block is the price point. Many people are still trying to get used to the idea that their $200 phones are actually $700 phones.

I have an iPhone X and LOVE it. Only people mad at the poor people who can't afford one.

The reason is clearly because they put out two new phone models at once.

Phone was gimmicky and unintuitive to navigate. The cost of production due to the expensive OLED screen and low yield rate make it not as profitable without the ridiculous price tag.

Phone technology in general is stagnant. The company that breaks the next frontier will take market share.

Companies are banking on VR and AI, but I don't either are the next big thing if gaming and small task are the only way they can be implemented in a mobile phone.

Battery technology improvement has also been very minimal.

Someone has to create a battery that can last multiple days on a single charge.

I wasn’t talking about face rec, I was talking about the $999 price point. I’m sure Google and Samsung are both hoping you’re right and this is just a bad report and the people are willing to drop $1000 for a phone.

Apple marketshare at 32% in US. Ouch.
I looked that up last night cause on sharktank some dude was creating an app and it was ios only at first. Made me think how stupid that was. Android is 68% marketshare. Samsung alone is larger than Apple.

This whole post

So 1 in 3 smartphones sold in the US is made by Apple? How terrible for them.

The iOS economy 2018

quote:

In its latest update on the App Store Apple reported that iOS developers earned $26.5 billion in 2017. A year ago the figure was $20 billion. The growth rate is then about 33%. The cumulative payments to developers can be calculated as $86.5 billion. This amount was generated in a span of less than 10 years, with the first billion paid by June 2010.

quote:

A few observations:

Developer payment rate is now above $25 billion/yr. I’ve been notified via Twitter that this is higher than the revenue of McDonald’s Corporation in 2016.
During this year iOS users will be spending about $100 million per day for Apps. This was Google’s AdWords revenue rate in 2012.
The spending on App Store has been rising steadily, adding about $5 billion/yr since mid 2011.
Apps are the biggest component of Apple services and helped that segment gross over $57 billion in 2017, passing Fortune 100 level (net of developer payments).

It's not just the thousand bucks. It's the fact that with the ongoing OS "upgrades" phones become slow and obsolete in 2 years so then it's another 1000+ dollars.

Android isn't any better at longevity, in fact they're probably worse due to the way the manufacturers have screwed up the OS update process. That's probably at least part of the reason Google is making flagship phones now rather than just the reference designs the old Nexus line was aimed at being.

edited to reflect consumer spending on app stores and a big reason why developers target iOS first. Not to mention the smaller set of hardware targets. This helps too:

Still using my 3.5 year old 6+ on the latest iOS. Yeah it's not as fast as a newer phone, but still very usable. Deleting a shitload of pics and videos from text message threads going back 8 years really made a difference When I get my battery replaced it will probably be even better. My daughter uses my old iPad 3 to play games and watch tv, it hasn't been able to be updated since iOS 9.x. Still works fine. My son has my old iPhone 5 and it works just fine for him.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting otherwise but a serviceable Android phone is much cheaper than an iPhone X. I'm still using a LG G4 that I have had for 2 years. And yes, it has slowed down more than I like but then again I only paid about 300 bucks for it on eBay. And I can also replace the SD card in it and the battery myself as needed.

I'm sure they would love market share, but they will never do it because they don't market to a large percentage of people that Android rules over. That market being the give me whatever crap smartphone is the free one.

Considering Apple has little to nonexistent marketing in that sector, 32% isn't that bad.

I don't get the dipshits that just want to piss on everything Apple or the ones that do it to Android. Both of these types of smartphones existing gives us all better products and options. Go be dipshits elsewhere.

App store sales were roughly almost equal last year between Google and Apple, even with Google's vastly higher market share. Building for Apple first gets a better audience for selling and you don't have to worry about a lot of issues that come with the open nature of Android.
