So, dumb question. If one doesn't have youtube music, is there a way to play your downloaded songs? I know the player that came with my Windows phone existed for a while, but I cannot even remember what it was called. Groove music?

how much music? are you storing it on local NAS to play at your house or are you looking for a way to 'take it with you'?

unfortunately google play music was the ultimate 'take it with you' so there was very little incentive for smaller app builders to try & replicate (see hulklogan's post) since everyone loved google's solution.

feels a bit like we're back where we started in terms of music portability and you're looking at a USB stick in your vehicle or CD-ROM of your MP3s.

Google says 'abide by our ever-changing rules regarding how you can listen to your music we talked you into storing for you or FIND YOUR OWN WAY TO DO IT'

welcome to 2004 thanks google!

Maybe 1,000 songs? Not certain. The transfer from phone to phone is so easy now, I never know if my music is actually on my device or not.

this is what happens when you are a member of OINK's pink palace, WHAT.CD..orpheus...

i became very spoiled and built my ultimate music collection over the course of 20 years or so that could fit nowhere except a large local storage device.

those sites; unlike shitty streaming services..thrive on being complete, accurate and of pristine quality. therefore rare, out-of-print, bootlegs, etc. were part of the scene. we're talking audiophile sites where albums like "Dark Side of the Moon" have well in excess of 100 different formats available to download.

yeah i'm a total fag for wanting EVERY SINGLE RELEASE from 4AD and other shite but like with any collection, if you're going to go to the trouble to do it, you might as well do it right.

and before anyone gets on their high horse, i'm presently looking at a MASSIVE stack of audio CDs behind me in my office..I tried to collect everything from certain labels when it was only on CDs back in the day so its not like i haven't invested heavily over the years in bands and artists i like.

so in short, i never attempted to stick any music files on my phone because i wouldn't know where to start. it seemed pointless to copy anything to my phone when google promised to keep my collection warm & toasty in that great Cloud in the Sky.

It was easy for me. I just wanted a core of songs that I would not mind hearing on shuffle no matter what I was doing. I spend enough time in places with no signal for me to want those on there.

Holy crap! This is definitive list of frickery in Youtube Music. I see many of my gripes are in here already but lord in heaven its so much worse than I thought.

Everything wrong with YT Music in one list

quote:

j. Casting directly to Sonos has been removed, even with a Premium account. You need to do it through the Sonos app with a terrible implementation. (thanks, redActarus) (App)

Here's a list of issues under BULLET #1.

quote:

1. General UI/UX
a. Uploads are hidden in separate drop-downs, making anyone who solely listens to uploaded music a second-class citizen and requires extensive menu navigation to access uploaded music at all. As noted, it takes four clicks just to get to your uploads, e.g. Library > Songs > Drop down > Uploads. It also doesn't save your last setting, ensuring maximum frustration. (thanks, OverKy & Dragon911X) (Browser/App)

b. Library is a tab, but it confusingly doesn’t mean uploads - uploads are hidden in a drop down. (Browser/App)

c. No Album sub-listing for artists in uploaded music. “Albums” as a top-level alphabetical tab by album name is nearly worthless, since most people (and competing apps, and GPM) organize by artist before album. (Browser/App)

d. Similarly hidden search for uploaded artists or songs, kept separate. Initial results confusingly only return Youtube videos. (Browser/App)

e. YTM landing page & app startup screen is full of unhelpful, unwanted information such as recommended music videos, artist pages, location-based recommendations, and is a barrier to accessing music. (Browser/App)

f. Search results have “Add to Library” for albums and tracks already in library, and it’s not clear if this will overwrite existing uploads. (Browser/App)

g. Android Auto head unit interface is terrible. (thanks, yottabit42) (App)

h. "In My Library" within each artist doesn't prioritize uploaded/liked content; don't want to scroll through dozens of albums to see the albums I like. (thanks, nerveworm) (Browser/App)

i. No Genre sorting or tab (thanks, Uncle-Eevee) (Browser/App)

j. No "last added" auto list for uploads. (thanks, CoogleGhrome) (Browser/App)

k. Artist names sometimes not present in search results. (thanks, Dio-V) (Browser/App)

l. Thumbs Up/Down are reversed from GPM UI. (thanks, stealthgyro) (Browser/App)

m. No swiping left/right to go to the next/last song. (daveyjones0017 however reports that this works) (thanks, _Nipples_) (App)

n. Delete From Library functions are in the mobile app menus in a way that may cause accidental deletions. (thanks, puxui666) (App)

o. Playlist and song controls not on same page (also present in GPM, but desirable nonetheless). (thanks, doublemp) (Browser/App)

p. Vertical scroll can be misinterpreted as a horizontal swipe, removing a song. (also present in GPM, but desirable nonetheless). (thanks, doublemp) (Browser/App)

q. No offline mode toggle (which could fix many of these issues). (thanks, kirksucks) (App)

r. Forced to use primary / non-brand YouTube account, requiring constant switching and preventing simultaneous use of both music and brand YouTube account. (thanks, OverKy) (Browser)

s. In the queue, you must be playing a track before the name of the artist or album is hotlinked in the list. (thanks, OverKy) (Browser/App)

t. On browsers (dunno about the app), the video progress bar is far away from the video. (thanks, OverKy) (Browser)

u. Deleting Uploads is a one-by-one process, no batch-select. Unworkable for more than single files. (thanks, OverKy) (Browser/App)

v. The mini player overlaps clickable buttons on smaller displays (e.g., 1366x768). (thanks, outroverso) (Browser)

w. No cover scroll for the library. (thanks, morgenman) (Browser/App)

x. Can't sort uploads search by Albums/Playlists/Artists/etc. (clicking Uploads, then Albums gives only YT results) (Browser/App)

y. Can not unlike song where you added it as an album (greyed out). Must dislike the song to remove it. (thanks, thedarksyde) (Browser/App)

z. Missing keyboard shortcuts compared with GPM. https://imgur.com/a/cgKb2Rv (thanks, stealthgyro) (Browser)

aa. When downloading an album, can't delete individual songs. Similarly, cannot remove individual songs from added non-locker albums. (thanks, fela90 & nicoscience) (App)

bb. Song cover art from GPM doesn't transfer to YTM well and is often lost in the transfer.(thanks, puppetjax) (Browser & app)

cc. The app gives you a push notification each time the app "checks for incomplete downloads" which is like every day. (thanks, puppetjax) (App)

dd. When you add a compilation album with multiple artists to the Library it completely ignores the album artist, so you end up with multiple artists being added to the library instead. (thanks, mrajsaint) (Browser/App)

ee. Liking a song also adds it to your Library. Sometimes people just like the one song and don't particularly want the artist/album in their Library. (thanks, mrajsaint) (Browser/App)

ff. Sometimes an album can change to "Private" and there's no way of deleting it without removing the album, but are unable to click on the album to remove it because it's been made private. (thanks, mrajsaint) (Browser/App)

gg. Likes sorting is no longer in order of "time of like." (thanks, miester) (Browser/App)

hh. Search doesn't work well for Uploads, burying relevant results lower than YT or GPM. (thanks, TheOvy) (Browser/App)

ii. YTM will not display a UI in Android Auto at all unless you're on premium. Unsafe and unusable. (thanks, Edgeguy13) (Browser/App)

jj. Keyboard music control buttons don't automatically work to play/skip in YTM. Update: turbotailz notes this appears to be a bug when Google Play Music Chrome extension is installed, and disappears when removed. (thanks, turbotailz) (Browser/App)

kk. The mousewheel volume control on the YTM desktop player is ridiculously oversensitive. The mouse wheel only takes 10 clicks to get to min/maximum. GPM is about twice as much. (thanks, TheKhaosUK) (Browser)

ll. The "Favorites" category appears to be broken. E.g., albums listened to once are in it forever, and other repeated-listening albums are never added. (thanks, TheOvy) (Browser/App)

mm. No switch between light and dark themes. (thanks, OneTouchDisaster) (Browser/App)

nn. No tile/grid view option for content, just list view. (thanks, OneTouchDisaster and SeekingSublime) (Browser/App)

oo. No 3-dot-menu links to "Go to artist" and "Go to album". (thanks, spando_calrissian) (Browser/App)

I know he gets a lot of criticism, but I have to agree with Cad here. I've been a longtime Google Play Music user and I'm very disappointed in the switch to Youtube music.

I have Sonos speakers all over my house and even my non-techie wife could easily play my google music library on sonos speakers. It's pretty ridiculous to have to pay for a premium membership to Youtube music in order to stream to my Sonos.

Also, the UI of Youtube music is horrible.

I just got a free 6 month sub to Spotify with my Chase Freedom card and have been enjoying it somewhat.I hate to have to pay for another service, but it may be my best option to stick with Spotify after my free trial. I refuse to pay for YT music. It's horrible.

If it makes you feel better, I’m finding that in ios14 they fricked up Apple Music. I feel like Apple Music is starting to look like YouTube music just in a white theme.

link?

only thing i see is you can 'point' to files on your phone and spotify lets you add them to playlists..ONLY WHEN YOU'RE USING THAT DEVICE.

that has absolutely nothing to do with google allowing users to post 100,000 personal tracks in the cloud for free and use anywhere you can log into your music account.
