I received a Copyright Infringement Alert from my internet provider this morning that claims that somebody using my IP address illegally downloaded or steamed a copyrighted movie.

Is this cause for concern? If this alleged activity did occur, how much hard time is the perpetrator looking at doing?

I don't know as a fact BUT I don't imagine your ISP and/or the movie industry is going to come after a single user getting a movie or 3.

Now, if you got the movie and 5000 others and are also distributing it, maybe they'd attack more. But I have a feeling the ISP is legally obligated to send out a real "scary" email.
I'd be inclined to think something like that is spam, giggle, and move on with my day. However, I don't grab movies simply for this reason.

You closely check to see if really from your ISP?

Reach out to your ISP and inform them you believe you received this message in error. You know you have never done this and are being proactive to let them know people are using the messages to Phish.

If legit, they will let you know right away through a communication channel you initiated. You will also have it documented that it was not you or anyone in your household and can start a conversation about further securing your IP address

none

If you keep downloading shifty torrents though, eventually your ISP will just cancel your internet.

I got those before. Started using BT Guard and never got a message since. I just pay for the yearly but when it expires I just don't download for like a month or 2 then renew and catch back up. Also use ytsdotmx for movies and never had a problem.

ISPs don’t care about what you download; they care if you host torrent seeds on your end.

Are you the same guy who gave me crap about streaming?
They likely won't actually act legally, but they might drop you if it's often enough. It would have to be quite a few times. Thankfully my ISP does not care about any of this stuff. They don't even record data usage.

I've gotten 3 of them in the last 8 years. Each time was when my VPN stopped when i was downloading a torrent and i dind't have the kill switch on.

As others have said, your ISP doesn't care. they are obligated to send you this. If you keep doing it and getting caught, then they'll just drop you.

Get a VPN.

Probably. Sounds vaguely familiar (and like something I would do). Just goes to show you can't take anything I say on here too seriously.
