I can click FAST.com anytime and it will show my speed as double what Speedtest.net shows every time. They both give the results in mbps. Why?

ETA- Just did this.

Interesting, I just did back to back tests and they were within 5% of each other but FAST was the higher of the two.

M-Lab gave me a speed between the two, slightly closer to FAST.

I reran them and they were all less than 2% apart with Speedtest being the highest this time.

I just ran them and edited to add a screen shot of both. It's every time.

Did you check and make sure they are using the same server?

No I didnt but have done it with Speedtest site using numerous different servers all with the same results/comparisons as this example. Baffles me.

Different servers, different traffic types, different QoS, different routes, different hops, load balancing to servers.

The amount of variables that could be effecting this is beyond what you are going to figure out.

My opinion as networking professional is if this is a consumer network and not a business. And you aren’t actively having issues is to move along with your life.

your selection of speedtest servers has a worse route than the fast.com server.

Fast.com is owned by Netflix, it performs downloads from Netflix servers to get your speed.

This thread prompted me to test my own, and strangely fast.com is giving me hilariously wrong results. Like in the 50 kbps range. I've tried at two different locations (though not far geographically) and two different ISPs.

Edit: It's a browser issue.

Interesting. For shits and giggles I just ran both from my phone. On my home WiFi, the results are roughly the same.

If I turn WiFi off (switching to AT&T 5G) I get 4 Mbps on fast.com and like 180 Mbps on speedtest. I wonder if this is because AT&T is throttling Netflix on cellular.

The days of T-1 speeds are long, long gone. I got flown to Newfoundland to troubleshoot why a VPN wouldn't connect to a tire dealer on a sub 200k connection. That was in November 2001, and I didn't own a jacket. Memories.

As previously mentioned Fast.com is owned by Netflix. A-Lot of ISPs now will have NetFlix Cache Servers, which are provided by NetFlix. So more than likely your speedtest to fast.com is hitting your ISP's local Netflix cache server. Which means it's staying local and not going out over the true internet.
