re: Conflicting Speed-Tests

As previously mentioned Fast.com is owned by Netflix. A-Lot of ISPs now will have NetFlix Cache Servers, which are provided by NetFlix. So more than likely your speedtest to fast.com is hitting your ISP's local Netflix cache server. Which means it's staying local and not going out over the true internet.
I moved to AR around the Hot Springs area about 8 months ago from Southern LA. Love it so far. I also just bought some land on Toledo Bend. I’ll be building over there soon. So when I want to go visit back home I’ll have a camp by the water to stay at. Best of both worlds is the hope/plan.
I mainly use mine for work because they’re portable. Some plans have data caps too so that limits your streaming. I generally get around 20-30 Mbps down and 10-15 up on mine. Not good enough if you have a houseful of streamers but plenty good enough for me to work on.
I have property in Arkansas and Louisiana and both are rural. I have an AT&T and Verizon hotspot. I just pack them with me and usually as long as I have Cell service I can work remotely. You can even bring it with you when you’re looking at the property. Connect to it and run a few speed tests just to see what you get.

I was looking at property one time and I had Cell service but the data speeds were really bad, so it’s good to test.
Being free is good for mental health.

Being bored is bad for mental health.
If it’s DSL and they have a modem/router combo then Best Buy may not have that. You can buy your own DSL modem online but there usually is some configuration involved for them to work. So you’ll probably have to call them. I have CenturyLink DSL and I use my own modem but I did have to call and get the settings. They wouldn’t help me configure it because it isn’t their modem but luckily I have a good bit of DSL experience and all I needed was the settings.
You should have a local ILEC in the area. Basically that's your local telephone company. They are the ones who usually will wire up telephone jacks. That may not be Spectrum which is why they don't do that anymore. It sounds like the tech's "Toner" wasn't working and that does complicate things when trying to locate phone lines. It's basically a tone generator.

That being said VoIP is probably your best option. You'll need network drops everywhere you want a phone. You'll need to find a provider. Spectrum may even do this, I'm not sure. A-lot of times they can setup an auto attendant for you pretty easily. Without you having to have a local PBX. Which is probably what you want. Getting VoIP working right on your network can be tricky sometimes, but it's common enough now that pretty much anybody in IT is dealing with VoIP now.

re: Anyone work in IT?

The advice I usually give to people just starting out or are thinking about getting into IT is to be open to moving out of the area. At least temporarily. I can only speak from personal experience, most people I went to school with went somewhere pulling cable or doing help desk type stuff for a small company starting out.

I decided to move to Tennessee and go work for Dell. It was tech support stuff, the money was lousy and benefits were non existent, but I stuck it out for a year and then moved back home. Having that on my resume got me the job I'm still at almost 20 years later.

You may not have to do this depending on where you live, but opportunities were limited for me at the time and by doing what I did it allowed me to kind of get a jump start on my career.

As far as certs I'd say anything security related would be very valuable. The A+, NET+ may be good places to start like others have said to see if you really have any true interest for it.

re: Anyone dealt with Lymphoma?

I have a family member dealing with something similar. Based on their experience I'll say that if you're having night sweats and you've developed a lump, then I'd go see a doctor as soon as possible.

Similar to you they felt fine, but started developing frequent night sweats and then it started with a lump on their head. May be nothing, but if it is than getting to it early seems to be key.

A month in a burn center
I spent a few weeks in a burn center a few years ago (Skin Grafts, Multiple Surgeries, etc..) I can only speak on what helped me but I can point to two things that helped.

1. Normalcy: Once I was relatively healed I just wanted things to get back to normal. I was tired of people trying to coddle me and wanting to constantly talk about it. I just wanted to go back to work and do the things I was previously doing and for people to treat me like they did before the fire.

2. Find a healthy Hobby/Distraction: Fishing, Hunting, Golf, music, anything. Even though it may only provide temporary relief having something you find fun to look forward to and go do helped me greatly.

Just like the physical scars, the mental ones may never completely go away, but over time they get less and less noticeable. I just took it day by day and had enough support and distractions that as time went on it got better.

This just my experience with it, I'd definitely seek professional help from someone if things don't start getting better especially if there was a loss of life involved in the fire. Luckily for me there wasn't

Good Luck

If you end up looking at new machines. Make sure you get one with a Solid State Drive (SSD). That alone will speed up a machine tremendously.

Anything security related is good to have. Any of the Cisco certifications are also good. Some kind of cert or training in VM Ware would probably be valuable too.
