Can someone explain to me what the point of Apple TV or Fire TV is?

I'm not sure I understand what these things are. I have a smart TV and have the Amazon app, Netflix, Youtube, etc. I already get all of these apps on my smart tv.
What is it that Fire TV or Apple TV offers that I don't already get through my smart TV?
I'm just kind of confused as to what these devices actually are.

Most of these products existed before smart TVs, plus most smart TVs native apps will be useless in a few years. Most TV manufactures have no incentive to keep updating the software.
Plus the firetv and apple TV have much broader support of applications.

The early generations of Smart TVs had crappy interfaces and app support. Some Smart TVs now have Roku or Android built in and support some of the new streaming TV apps like DirecTV Now and PlayStation Vue. If it doesn’t you need a streaming box to access these new services.
Also, Alexa makes Fire TV very useful to some. With PSVue I can tell Alexa to do things like pause, fast forward or change the channel.

When I go out of town and want to watch my shows, it is much easier to pack a fire stick than an entire tv.

Netflix on my smart tv is slow and a pain in the arse.
Netflix on my fire stick is quick and sexy.

The 4k Apple TV is the only one that supports Dolby Vision HDR.

1. Lots of people are probably like myself and have a houseful of “dumb” tvs. They all have great pictures and work like they should but I wanted to be able to steam Netflix/Amazon or anything else to them.
Much cheaper to get FireTvs, Sticks, AppleTV etc for this purpose.
2. As others have said- most Smart Tv interfaces suck. These devices are smooth and user friendly.
3. Easy to take with you or move around to different rooms in the house. I’ve taken a FireTV on trips several times for my son to watch his shows on. Can’t do that with a SmartTv.
4. Kodi
