Ole lady is wanting a camera for her bday and I’m in the dark on this one. She’s set on getting one despite being told smartphone cameras are nearly as good. Looking for mid price range

I'm no photographer and so have no recommendations, but I will say that while smartphone cameras are very good they are not nearly as capable as a "real" camera. Bigger sensors, bigger and interchangeable lenses, more control over the whole process. Whether she wants it for potential work, art, or just fricking around and learning, it's going to offer a lot more than a smartphone camera.

OP you can either buy your ole lady this camera or a loaded mid-size SUV. What you do with your $50k is up to you.

I was putting in as much effort as the OP. I misread though, thinking he gave no budget.

I guess "midrange" is more around the 2k to 3k mark.

Im a long time lurker, but made an account to tell you that I have a bunch of nicer camera equipment (body, lenses) that I'm trying to sell. My dad recently passed away, but I haven't been in a rush to try to sell the photography stuff. If you're interested, DM me and I can provide a list.

Love my a7iii. I got it last year and am saving up for 70-200mm 2.8.

When I was shopping for a new camera I asked a professional photographer friend of mine for a recommendation. She recommended upgrading my cell phone because I already carry it and already use it as a camera. To actually use a separate camera I would have to get used to carrying two electronic devices, and that is unlikely to happen.

Anyway, I bought a Fuji. Great camera.

I've had most major brands, the best cameras (standard lenses are awesome too) were Fuji.

I wish they made a full frame, but they have the best quality, and image quality of all I've used.

Ole lady
"Ole lady" infers she is not capable of taking advantage of the features of a DSLR camera and the cost that comes with it. Just get her a new cell phone, but school her on proper picture-taking techniques and how to properly compose (and crop) the image. That, in my opinion, is just as important as camera type and features.

Example: Know when to turn the cellphone camera into the horizontal/landscape mode (which is the majority of the time) rather than portrait/upright.

Biggest question is what will she be shooting….portraits, landscapes, sports, kids…don’t over spend if she’s not experienced with a dslr. If she’s just goofing off and will always shoot in auto mode, get a nice point and shoot.

There are two common types of sensors. APS-C and Full Frame. Full frame sensors allow more light in, so the pictures are better. You’ll pay for it though.

My entry level was a Sony a6500. It’s a great camera.

You could find a Sony a6500 for a good price right now. Look on Reddit r/photomarket.

Plus, APS-C lenses are generally cheaper.

I started my hobby in 2017 before our first kid was born. Just upgraded to a Sony a7iii full frame. I’ve spent probably $5000 on camera bodies/lenses since then. Can be an expensive hobby

If you want to keep it simple and not cost too much, point and shoot might be a good starting point. This would allow her to get started using a "camera" to see how she likes it.

The Point and Shoot that I have is a Cannon "Power Shot" SX 620 HS. One thing I was looking for was a camera with a good zoom. This one has a 25x zoom and my old camera was only a 7x zoom. I have had this one for about 10 years and it cost under $300.

I use this camera a lot while out hunting or fishing. This is a fairly small camera and can easily be put in my pockets or I mostly keep it in a small carrying case attached to my belt.

What does she hope to do with it? What kind of pictures does she aspire to take?
