Needs to be very powerful with 32 gb of RAM. I run alot of virtual machines. Also want very good battery life. Also prefer a onboard Ethernet port, not a dongle. Also like a bigger screen, more 15-16" instead of 13-14"

I'm leaning toward the Lenovo T580, I also like that you can swap the battery on the fly. Just not sure if the quality is still there with Lenovo.

Any other suggestions?

Somewhat at odds with

very good battery life

Ultimately, it's all relative, but higher power, larger screen computer are going to hog more battery than the opposite.

Lenovo makes a fine machine... Particularly in the "work station" class like you're talking about. On my phone right now but if any others come to mind I'll post later.

Lenovo X-1 Carbon. I enjoy my Carbon for work so much, I bought one for my personal use.

If you get the T580, get the i7 processor over the i5.

I can tell you that my Dell 7730 lasts about four hours with moderate usage. Don't get one if you're worried about battery life

You're at odds here with wanting a very powerful machine with great battery life, doesnt really exist.

You either can go for something with a i7-8550u or i7-8650u 4 core/8 thread and potentially get some great battery life with a 15 watt tdp chip or go for very high performance and get something with a i7-8750h or i7-8850h 6 core/12 thread and get likely nowhere near the same kind of battery life.

Considering it sounds like battery life is utmost important, I'd definitely get something with a "u" chip in it. I'd also not worry about the ethernet port because that could potentially really limit you from getting a great laptop that just is too thin for an ethernet jack but has USB-C + USB-A.

I have a i5-8400H in my work laptop (Dell Latitude 5491) and while the performance is very nice (paired with 16GB of RAM + 256gb nvme SSD), the battery life doesnt come close to those laptops with i5/i7 'u' processors and this thing sounds like it's ready for takeoff half the time I'm using it (Fan noise)

I would have given up a little performance for all-day battery in the end.

Why not host the VMs on a desktop or server and access them remotely?

because I need them on a local machine to connect to different pieces of equipment. sometimes where there is no internet connectivity.

No power you can plug into? Construction sites? They should at least have some type of temporary power setup. You could also get a power adapter for your vehicle.

Yeah sometimes we just don't have any power.

I ended up going with the Lenovo t580. The ability to live swap the battery is really what sold me. I can get 2 of the high capacity batteries and that should tide me over.

I use a Lenovo for my business and love it.

Thanks you checking back in. I hate it when people start a thread asking for advice and never come back and give resolution to the thread. Just a pet peeve of mine.
