My suggestions and subscriptions being overrun with "shorts" was annoying me, until I came across a solution.
I use uBlock Origin. (If you aren't using an ad-blocker, you are not experiencing the Internet as you should.) If you go to the preferences for the addon, you can add custom filters. This one removes shorts from the video list on YouTube. You can still get to them if you go to a specific YouTube channel, but they won't appear in browsing or search results.

Code is here

90% of the shorts on my subscription feed are taken from the longer-form videos. It's annoying as frick to have them clogging up my feed.

But have you met the average attention span of this board?

Are they good quality or just like chunks of content with no purpose other than trying to market long form? I thought of doing this once I start pushing out more long form. But if this is a common thing that people don't like then I'll stray away from doing it.

I think it depends on the audience.

We're a dumb society of TikTok attention spans so obviously YT has decided it's wanted/valuable. And I'm sure they're right to some extent.

But some guys I know who have substantive channels are doing it and it is annoying because you've got to wade through 50 of these 30 second clips of them talking about today's news to get to the well made reviews/instructional vids, etc.

They're literally just snippets taken from their longer videos. I'm not interested in the sound byte. I'm interested in the whole video.

The only one I like is a guitar guy who will do really short chords for songs. Like, "here's this song: A minor, C, E minor, D," or some really simple progression like that. He plays it a couple times. Done. They're perfect for a late-stage beginner like me.

Then you will love SponsorBlock... Crowd sourced YouTube add blocking. Basically, someone marks and shares ad segments so that others can auto-skip them. This includes the YouTube cutaway commercials and the creator pitches.

Yeah I get that. There is a reason video content has changed . Human attention span has changed. Even in long form videos I am learning that it has to move. Like tv. How they jump from scene to scene. Old YouTube is a dying breed. Long live old YouTube.

Hurts content creators?

Shorts are awful because they're just blurbs for people with short attention spans. They lack actual substantive content. Worst of all, they are filmed vertically. I hate them.

They should be separated from the rest of the video feeds on youtube. If i wanted to get on insta, tiktok, or facebook whatevers, I would do that.

That's your perspective. You are are old school and honestly so am I, but they pay. 50 billion views a day on Shorts. You can hate on them as a user. You have that option. Creators better jump on them or be left behind. But I do agree that they should be completely separate. On mobile they have their own tab. But when people are watching on tv or something in 16:9 ratio they shorts shouldn't show up. But that's what they want you to see because that's what the majority is watching now.

I'm easy to find on social. I don't like plugging my channel because I do not want people who don't watch my content to watch my content. It hurts the performance of the channel. I used to plug my channel, but it's a very very bad thing to do.

I watch the shorts on my phone, but sitting at my computer I don't need to see all that in my Sub list. Thank you for this.

Blocking ads is getting more and more common. Eventually content creators that aren't sponsored could decide to call it quits because there is no money in it. And people will complain that the internet sucks just like TV sucks.

Nah the ones that will call it quits are the ones who only chase YouTube for views and don't know how to make money outside of YouTube.
Wait til you start seeing verticals in long form that aren't shorts. Content creators are now making 1:30-2:30 videos shot in vertical format which are considered "long form" and make 10x the amount of money shorts does. It's because most people watch stuff on their phone. You won't be able to block these videos. You can hide that type of content though.

Then they aren't doing it for the joy or love or whatever you want to call it. The ones who last and the ones who are the most successful, are doing it no matter what just from the pure joy of it. Every channel I'm subbed to was waaaaay before shorts. I've subbed to people with no following and watched the glow up. You want the fame, work for it.
